Maybe he's building the 1988 Topps set.
some 8's & 9's...
Because not everyone is a big Richie Rich! I can't even afford to do 7's for 1971 and anything above a 7 for 1973-79 would've been WAY out of my price range.

I think this is more of a modern question. Unless the plot of Brewster’s Millions or King Ralph becomes my true-life story, vintage 10s take way too high a % of my hobby budget.
Not everyone can but a PSA 10 Mickey Mantel 1952 Topps.

If I was buying a graded modern card there’s no reason not to buy a 10 unless the serial number is so low you can’t find one. They’re printing this stuff like crazy.
From 1978 and up, 99% of the 8's are useless/worthless. 9's are slightly more viable, but not much. I am not including refractors numbered to 50 and down or topps heritage refractors # to 60 or 70. Or auto's. Just regular cards.
I like the special for $15, but when I start thinking about what if I get 8's and 9's on most, it might be a losing proposition.
I still like the idea of $10 each but only encase 9's and 10's. Encasing 8's and lower is a waste of time for 1978 and up for 99% of the cards. This would help save some costs for the consumer and save time for PSA for grading and shipping your cards back to you.
Omgosh, im sooo for that. Instead of casing everything they should just stick all sub 9s in some type of sealed toploader that you can verify the grade and authenticity but just not all fancy and whatnot.
Actually that would build the "mystic" of getting a 9 or 10. People would be like "oh youres is ENCASED!?! DANGGGG"
I dig it.

Ha! So true. Sadly, sadly true.
He can keep his 2019 and up as 10s and I'll keep my '71s that are 7-9. I'm fine with that all day.
I am so jelly...

Every once in while you can find something pretty, even in grades below 2. So instead of one ten here’s ten one’s. 😁

The new wave of collectors are an interesting bunch. The Reddit and Blowout posts are fun to read through from time to time. Will be interesting to see how many hang on in the hobby over the next 5 years.
No silly, it's short for jealous! You must not be a South Park fan...

Aren't these a lot more interesting than tons of 1/1 gimmicks? I don't suppose for some of these (like that one Joe DiMaggio card from a few years back someone showed here) there's nothing higher than say 2 or 3 or something? And what's wrong with that last card? Looks a lot better than a 1 to me unless like a good chunk of the back is ripped off or there's a really big lightning bolt crease or something...

I like a well centered 9. They look as good as a 10 and cost a fraction of the $.
Of course if I were more of an investor, I would prolly buy 10's instead.
I am having some conceptual issues with grading... are the 1 and 1.5 Cards posted really that bad to warrant those grades? It seems that there are real spreads in terms of what is and is not tolerable at the 1 to 2.5 grade level

“Buy the card, not the holder.”
Learn it. Live it. Love it.
I think every card here, both ones I slabbed myself and ones I bought slabbed, would look very at home in higher numbered holders…
…and more and more collectors seem to agree: the card under the flip matters, too.
ETA: I have a ten card order at PSA right now; I am a huge fan of their service and use them exclusively. I’m a small time low to mid grade collector who occasionally stumble a upon something higher. And I collect mostly (85%) vintage pre 1970s baseball (that’s all I sub, and if I want modern PSA 10’s I save up and buy ‘em which is very infrequent).

Thank you. I owe a debt of gratitude on that one and the ‘59 to a magnificent transaction on these very boards with @mexpo75

Thanks for the kudo! I sometimes wish I still had them. I am so glad they ended up with a great guy and collector!
I still look from time to time on eBay at all the available 1954 Red Heart Mantle’s; it’s just a great card. Honestly, very rarely is there ever one with equal or better centering on both front and back.

hey 51Wheaties...
Very Cool looking back on your Red Heart
I's gotta dumb question on those Red Heart's: how were they issued??? was the card inside the bag of dog food?
Too bad I wasn't around in 1954....I'd be crazy enough to still have Unopened bags of '54 dog food...
That's an Awesome card brother...Oh Yeah...
Because I want to, and can /
I think it was a mail in thing….send the dog food labels and ten cents and get some cards in the mail.
