Hey Buffalo Nickel Guys!! Did I find a 13-S Type 2 or what?

MeltdownMeltdown Posts: 8,762 ✭✭✭✭✭

Searching through a bag o' nickels yesterday & today and spotted this.
It's not my series at all, I was just looking to upgrade some of my album set.
It's a type 2, correct? Pretty scarce?

Nice score! Looks XF45ish, worth $500ish. That’s a hell of a bag of nickels!

A major find! Someone's Buffalo Nickel collection must have been dumped into circulation by heirs who just wanted to get rid of what, to them, was just a bunch of coins. Who needs coins when you have an I-Phone?

This is sweetness!! Do you think an acetone bath would really make it pop?

Looks good, but I just don't like the way the 3 in the date overlaps the 1.

    Is it just me?

The mintmark is lightly struck, and what's with the double rim?

The "3" overlapping the "1" is strange; neither of the ones I've owned had a date anything like that.

I don't see anything wrong with the "S" though.

It sure does. The 3 also looks like it stands proud of the 1.

I had a problem with the mintmark location. Most 13-S ty 2 mintmarks are below the E and C and centered.

But I found this NGC one with the MM the same position as the OP Nickel, although not weakly impressed.

These are the mintmarks on the two I've owned; it looks like one of each location (an F15 raw and an NGC AU58):

I appreciate the discussion, thanks. It was the one and only hole in my album set. I will just enjoy the score for now!
