I officially joined around 10 years ago, but lurked for a number of years before that, just reading others posts. this was a much more active place 10-15 years ago. I think that message boards as a whole are significantly less popular now as people have migrated to "social media" platforms. I find the information on FB, IG, Insta etc. to be really lacking as compared to that i used to find on here. mostly people showing off recent "pulls" and very short 1-2 sentence responses. not a lot of meat and potatoes knowledge being exchanged.

I used to love all the vintage unopened talk that used to go on around here. it was a part of the hobby i have never participated in, but i feel like i learned a lot reading all the posts from years ago.

Firmly agree with this post @craig44 . I remember your posts from the huge Frank Thomas NNOF thread, and most of my board participation is limited to that thread as it is mainly what I collect. I think I joined here around the same time that you did but I also lurked for quite some time as well.

I'm on the "Vintage Wax and Packs" group on Facebook, which I'm many of you unopened guys are familiar with. It is just about the best buy and sell Facebook group out there with an honest group of guys that self police well. There is a ton of knowledge there too if you ask the right people but much of it gets lost in the shuffle or bumped down the feed as is common these days for the quick hitting nature of social media. Long form discourse is painfully absent from much of our lived experience these days. For that reason I am grateful for the slower pace of places like this.

Yes, Davallio had every Postwar set baseball and football in PSA 8. I don't remember if he collected basketball or hockey. I think the only card that was not PSA 8 was the 1952 Mantle. He had basically a run of raw high grade sets too. I remember seeing a few pictures of all the binders on tables in a room. It was a site to behold. I remember when he needed a few cards from various sets and tracked them down. What an absolutely unbelievable collection.

Jim Crandell aka Dav was an interesting character who enjoyed the fray. Of interest, back when he was shooting for the 100 PSA sets PSA 8 or better, Brian Dwyer - I believe (Prez of REA) - was in college and buying cards for Jim. My possible "take" on JIm? He worked for Lehman Bros and had 100K/yr budget and in the crash of 2008? I wonder if he went broke? Since, he was divesting later on - thru Steve Novella (ebay) - I met with Steve at the National who told me he was selling some of his sets for Jim.

Quite a few old time posters missing. People move on, get passionate about other things. Sometimes life gets in the way. I can tell you this, the board was the wild, Wild West 15 years ago. I actually kinda miss the drama

Yeah, I was a part of it, no doubt. Still here which is probably a miracle. Zardoz would drive me nuts when I would get a good one going and totally change the subject in the middle of the thread. I would bombard him with my best shots but he would ignore me......LOL :D

Mike, I had no idea what had happened to Jim Crandell. I am terribly sorry for him. Recessions have struck me down more than once, but it sounds like he took a rotten fall. When you gotta let go of your cards to put food on the table, as well as other vital things, that would hurt, though at least his cards would be very liquid. I pray he gets good prices for his cards. --- Indiana Jones (Brian Powell)

that Frank Thomas NNOF thread was epic. I should go back and sift through it again. It was so fun to see it happen real time.

I purchased a card from Jim through Brian many years ago. Brian’s reputation preceded him and now as President of REA his many years in the hobby have rewarded him. Congratulations Brian.
Jim kept saying Lehmans was too big to fail. He had a ton of stock and held on to the end. Hope he’s doing well.

Although only officially a member here since January 2004, I had been lurking for a few years prior. I spent most of my time on the U.S Coin Forum, but always read most posts here. The knowledge I have gained is literally, unquantifiable!

Given that this is the week of The National, I cannot believe no one has mentioned one of the undisputed Legends of this forum.....
