Was an odd year in many ways.
1913 the federal reserve act was passed. (Nothing numismatic, or was it).
1913 (5) V nickels were minted without fanfare ( went to son of the witch of Wall Street :insider work ? )
1913 Buffalo nickel struck on gold planchet.

Odd enough. Do you think the same guy who made the V nickels had a hand in that gold Buffalo nickel ?

    A 1913 Proof set.

The Federal Reserve gave us Federal Reserve notes. So collectors did get something. It also distributes coins.

The 5 1913 Nickels were underground until the 1920s. That gave time from the fellow, Brown, who made them illegally to give himself some cover.

As for the 1913 gold Buffalo Nickel, I have to confess, I didn't know about that one.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

When did the 1913 gold Buffalo Nickel first appear?

No, because the 1913 Liberty Nickels were cared for properly.

The Gold Buffalo first appeared in 2019, about 100 years after the 1913 liberty Nickels first appeared.
Was it made by the same guy that made the 5 1913 Liberty Nickels? Who Knows, but maybe someone that is still living knows as the gold buffalo Nickel was brought to a Philadelphia coin shop and sold in 2019. Not a lot of people will talk about this but it is clearly a lead.
As to not properly having been cared for, aside from the test cut, minor wear could have been from a pocket show piece, as in "Hey, look what I got". Never circulated but in a pocket from time to time by itself. That could be one explanation for the AU 53 grade.
A very interesting story that has yet to be told. I am working on it.
