!989 D cents Thick and Thin 9 Varieties ???

Piano1Piano1 Posts: 233 ✭✭✭

Hello, again. Raining like crazy here in NH so my wife can't hand me the rake and shovel to plant flowers and a bush or 2. 🤣

Anyway, may I ask what's with this pair of 1989 D "Thick and Thin 9" cents? I'm not into contemporary errors but I DO see a clear difference in the location of the D mintmark. The coin on the left features the D almost clearly under the 8 (slightly to the left) but the other coin shows the D notably further to the left of the 8. Is this a "recognized variety" or just the result or the multiple zillions that were minted?? I hope the photos show this.

As always, thanks!!! Piano 1

May I suggest that you research why mint marks appear in different places on different coins and report back with your findings - you'll learn more that way.

You can check here for varieties:

@Piano1... I really cannot determine anything from those pictures... Need better pictures without the glare of lights. Cheers, RickO

Thank you all for your comments. IkesT, I went and explored the site you suggested and it is really a great spot to learn about mintmark "varieties" and other areas. Thanks for sharing the link. I haven't been able to do a good match yet (if one is listed and the coin is not just worn and banged up a bit). The link will be very helpful when I try to decipher other mintmark issues I might encounter. Varieties are not really my "thing" but you have gotten me curious now. Much appreciated!!
