@braddick posted a cool looking Ike which reminded me of this monster (or is it monstrosity) that just crossed the auction block recently.
What do you all think of the look?
What do you think of the $2,081 price it brought at GC this past Sunday?
Toned Ike collector here. Not a fan of this coin at all and it looks AT to me. The color pattern looks similar to what I’ve seen on a lot of brown box proof Ikes but I’ve never seen an MS one like this.

I lean AT as well. I still like it for what it is, I just would not want to personally pay an NT price (and thus I did not even bid).

You think it was AT'd before slabbing or AT'd in the slab?
My guess is that it straight graded from a raw coin.
But there is a chance someone could have gassed an older slab and then sent it in for reholdering.
I'm not a fan of toning as dark as the toning on the obverse. Even with the bright lighting there is no color on the portrait. I like the reverse but the obverse kills it for me.

To me, that coin is the epitome of ugliness.... Where is the vomit emoji when needed. I know, some collectors like this... Fine, collect and enjoy what pleases you. Someone likely paid a premium for it. Cheers, RickO
Since no one was guessing the price, I added it in the original post and title. It sold for an incredible $2,081!
Did anyone think it would bring that much?
I'm a simple man. I just have one question: How in God's name can the TPG'ers tell if it's AT or NT or detailed/damaged? Or is it just about the bottom-line and everyone wins??
Disclaimer: I'm not a dealer, trader, grader, investor or professional numismatist. I'm just a hobbyist. (To protect me but mostly you! 🤣 )
There are apparently a lot of collectors out there with more money than sense. If I were someone who owned coins like this I would get them to auction as quickly as possible, take the money and ..... RUN!

I love good toners but I was waiting for the confirmation from you, as I had no idea how to express my thoughts on this particular gem.

The grading services don't care if it's AT or NT. They only care it it's MA (Market Acceptable).

Just for the record… I have nothing against AT coins…. just as long as they are straight graded and attractive. I would also pay extra for them (only under those circumstances) but just not moon money. I am worried about the long-term stability of ANY toned coin, which makes paying huge sums for them, based solely on that qualifier, a very dicey proposition..

Exactly, which means the bottom-line... Right?
So if it was not MA, would they detail it?

Ikes do tone a little differently, but this one looks like it had help. Whether or not it got this way naturally or not, it's not a look that appeals to me.
I will NEVER be DONE at being AMAZED at what some people will pay for TONERS.......

If only he could get it in a CACG holder or CAC sticker (far fetched I know)… Can you imagine the threads or the bidders gleefully willing to throw fistfuls of money at it?

I don’t see what you people see in this coin toning is pretty dark and weird
Not a huge fan.
I am drawn toward it as I do enjoy unusual and in my mind’s eye, cool looking Ikes.

I figured you would like it.![:) :)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
I'm not sure if many of us would like to pay the final price though (which no one has attempted to guess yet).
I would be afraid to guess price as either way I’d probably be wildly off the mark!

Ugly AT Coin, at a remarkably foolish price.

Would some collectors opinion vary if it was CAC'ed?

It seems too dark, has too much purple, is too symmetrically concentric and has obv/rev sides which are opposite in color progression.
Pass.
Pass.

I'd be afraid it would tone darker, regardless of the holder.

Ugly, I would not even think of bidding on that.

AT in my opinion, and not attractive.
Maybe this one was 'worked' after encapsulation?

Cladking here, love to see such a controversial coin cause such a stir, check out the more lively pics on IG under my pseudonym - Cladking.
I have a couple of Ikes with similar toning still in their original mint packaging. I'll have to take some photos and post them.

My thoughts too.
40% silver Ikes, or all CuNi?
I’m not a fan.
Congratulations to the consignor!
This coin is clad Cu/Ni with no silver, correct?
No silver in this one
