What do you think this coin sold for at auction recently?
And what do you think it’s worth?

I guess it sold for $1250 which means it's worth $1250. I would probably pay $250-300 if I was looking for a nice toner.

I am in the $400 to $500 range as a buyer, but my guess it sold for more. If it got up into the 4K range, that would be crazy money.

Retail is $130, so maybe an extra $200 or $300 premium for color?? Anything more than that would be crazy. IMHO.

I realize there i san IMHO at the end of the response, but just because one does not agree with the market does not mean it is crazy.

Fair enough. To each his own.

I was watching that one and gave up when it went over $500 the morning of the final day of bidding. I was utterly floored at the final price. I won't put the spoiler in here, all I can say is wow...

No idea of final price... and I would not buy it, it is tarnished. I do like the reverse though.... Cheers, RickO

Tough date for nice toners, nice even obverse toning with money colors…

I’d value it at $600-$800. I could see a couple of extremely enthusiastic bidders pushing it up to $1250-$1500.

    My first thought was $1500

An extremely common date Morgan Dollar with toning that will unleash a bidding frenzy among collectors with more money than sense. It probably brought well over $1000.

    All glory is fleeting.

The toning is very nice but I’d argue that 1904-O is relatively not a tough date for color. After the 80-82 (S), 83-85 (O), and 86-87 (P), it’s probably the next most commonly found toner.

The coin looks under-graded to me and I'll guess $2000.

When I did my rankings I had 1879-S, 1885, and 1896 above it but I agree with you - the date does not command an extra toning premium.

For those whose values are well under the market:

    1) are you answering what it’s worth to you?
    2) do you think the market for all of these is crazy and so you answer what you think it “should” be worth?
    3) you genuinely can’t tell a $500 toner from a $2000 toner?

I don’t think all sale prices are tautologically correct market value so I think it’s possible (and even reasonable) to say that something sold cheaply or expensively.

Toners are really hard to value, especially from pictures. The market can be quite thin and the spreads between different people’s internal valuations can be wide. I’ve been one of two bidders at twice the level of the 3rd. That happens very rarely for coins with an established price guide.

You might do a little research. You'll find more than one result that exceed YOUR color premium.

And one auction does make it the market for that coin on that day.

I have no color premium! It's a personal choice!

Holder does not matter, $100 coin, probably $1500-$2000 for color. Great Look. I saw it in hand. J.P.

Did you see the whole batch? There were a handful of nice toners in that same auction all in Anacs holders (I liked the look of most).

I was going to wait a little longer but it seems like we likely have most who wanted to participate guess already.
The final price (with the buyer's fee) was $2,081.25.

I liked this coin and figured it would be more attainable due to a general bias against Anacs holders (which I don't share). I was surprised to see it go so high since my guess was it would end closer to $1k.
I wonder if the buyer plans to keep it in the Anacs holder or will try to send to PCGS. I also wonder if it would have gone for about the same or more in a PCGS MS 64 holder?

It doesn’t strike me as a crazy price. I’m surprised the holder didn’t hold it back more though. I also wonder how vibrant it is in hand. If the winning bidder gets it in a PCGS holder and it stickers, we could all be in for a surprise.

Very thick iridescent toning like a rainbow trout. Probably in PCGS plastic with cac a lot more.

I would not be surprised if it upgraded to a 65 at PCGS. At that point, I think it would sell for more. But for some reason I believe if it was in a PCGS 64 holder at auction (without ever going to Anacs), it would have brought around the same $2k. There is no way to prove that but it's what I think.

    My guess $250 - $300

It’s a function on who’s bidding how much pocket.

Ok see it went for $2k + astounding lol.

    Which auction was it?
I graded a group of 20 or so coins. Not sure if I saw the whole deal. This was probably the best of the submission. If the coin graded 63 to 65 in anyone's holder, would have brought same price. You can't price grade color. This would have to gone into a 66+ to 67 holder to reflect price. Will probably move to another holder to appeal to the Kool Aid drinkers. Great coin in hand. J.P.

It was a Great Collections auction.
Here were two other coins that I liked and had some strong results:
