Question for Yankees fans

I was looking at players in monument Park. I noticed Dave Winfield wasn't in there. Should he be included in with the Yankees greats?

Because of the feud with George I don't see him ever being included. He was a perennial all star and put up great numbers, but off the top of my head I think Don Mattingly is the only player in monument park that didn't win a championship. Winfield was a great player but doesn't come close to the popularity of Mattingly.

It may be Winfield doesn’t want it; his formative years as a Padre and championship years as a Blue Jay (and Twin?), the years with the Yankees were considered disappointing.

Oddly enough, they really weren’t: no franchise won more game than the Yankees in the 1980’s but it was pre Wild Card so there were only 1-2 postseasons.

  • He also went into the Hall as a Padre. That might be part of it.

He does get welcomed back to Old Timers Day, but I think the fact that he spurned them for the Padres for his HOF plaque is why the Yankees haven’t honored him in MP or retired his #31
