. From The So-calleddollar.com website.......
"The Continental Dollar restrikes have been popular with collectors since they were originally made in 1861 by Professor Montroville Dickeson. Dickeson’s dies fell into the hands of a number of prominent numismatists including Thomas Elder, Q. David Bowers and Robert Bashlow, that used them to issue restrikes.
The dies were reported to have been donated to the Smithsonian, but the hubs created from Dickeson’s original dies were acquired by Jeff Shevlin and were reused to create new dies. Daniel Carr of the Moonlight Mint created the new dies from which these restrikes were made."

Pretty cool, I must say :-) Sure wish I had the $5k for gold one, I'd be all over that one!
So I picked up these three and one to commemorate his new book

I like them. I think I'll get at least one, only because @dcarr struck them.
Are these restrikes or are they replicas? There is a difference.

Well, he does say "the hubs created from Dickeson’s original dies were acquired by Jeff Shevlin and were reused to create new dies. Daniel Carr of the Moonlight Mint created the new dies from which these restrikes were made."
I don't think I would go as far as saying they are replicas because the Dickeson's hubs were used to make working dies.
.
Personally I'd rather own these than Dickeson's but, thats just me. Prolly because it won't be made in huge quantities by Dan

So, it's a restrike of a replica.![;) ;)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)

I’d call it a replica of a replica of a replica.
Personally, I usually use the word restrike when the hobby/market uses the term, even if it’s inaccurate.
They are nice looking and represent the originals well. Not an area of interest for me, but the documented background adds to the attraction. Cheers, RickO
I'm in for the bi-metal since Dan is involved. Peace Roy

I picked up five recently:
O/S Morgan, O/S Peace, O/S & Off Centered on 76 Ike, O/S 76 Ike, and struck on Copper blank. All listed in * section. Love them all, but I like the Copper blank strike best.
I read these are struck from newly made Carr dies cut from earlier 1960 replica coin hubs.
"Obverse and reverse Continental Currency dies where made in 2022 using
original circa 1960 Bashlow hubs."
Order in for the Continental Dollars. 1 Silver and 1 Copper
I like the Combo of Jeff the so-called-guy, and Mint master Dan Carr, and of course the subject matter of the medal/coin/retrike/whatever.
I dont have a set of the Dickeson strikes, but I like the capital holder three piece set for his that Ive seen online so I got a copper , a Brass and a Silver and plan to put them in a 3 slot capital holder.
It's all about what the people want...
The working dies for this project were created via direct hubbing from Shevlin's hubs. For each side, I mounted a virgin (not-hardened) die blank in my coin press, along with the hub. Then I intentionally "clashed" the two, to transfer the hub's relief to the blank die. Then I had to grind some off the perimeter off the newly-hubbed die so as to reduce it back down to the original diameter (the hubbing process, as expected, squashed the virgin die and caused it to expand in diameter a little). After grinding, the new die fit into the collar properly. After that, the die was heat-treated (hardened) and processed like any other die that I engrave.
This is the only time that I have hubbed any working dies.
.
Not a bad thing but from my perspective not a good thing either. For some reason this issue remains a popular subject and so it becomes a generational replica which only seems to confuse collectors as to which ones were struck when and by who. I would hope any dies and any working hubs would be destroyed to put an end to the copying, but since there is always a dollar to be easily made I won't hold my breath and wait for that to happen.
Unlike the OP who would choose one of these prettier examples, I'd prefer to own a Dickeson original or one of the Elder "Confederation" mules.

Anyone know the mintage for the bi-metallic versions?
A lovely piece!
TD
I got a brass dcarr continental dollar. Look forward to placing it with my 1911 S Buffalo Nickel.

Maybe posted on their website?
No mintages are posted on Jeff's website. Dan has mintages posted but not for bi-metallic versions. It's likely the bi-metallic are a subset of the silver and copper mintages but would love to get confirmation. @SoCalledGuy @dcarr
What looks like "bi-metallic" versions pictured earlier in this thread are actually selectively-plated pieces. So they are struck as mono-metallic pieces, and then Jeff Shevlin had some selectively-plated elsewhere (not by me since I don't generally offer that service anymore).
