What do you think this (polished) 1909 VDB Lincoln will close at?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,180 ✭✭✭✭✭

I am a bit surprised at the price it is at already along with the number of bids.
(Even the seller's description lets on how this coins was polished.)

    An idiot and shill bidding?

Is this kind of bidding the result of the rise of the internet and the decline of in-person coin clubs?

Wonder if the uninformed bidders think this is a proof????? And it sure looks way more than just "Gently Wiped" with a jewelers cloth.

Seller doesn't know what he's talking about. That's not a polished turd... that's gotta be a proof! What a Cherry Picking opportunity >:)

I wonder how long before it shows up on one of the coin forums with the new owner asking how much this rare error is worth, or perhaps why it failed to grade at a TPG. :*

Based on the other items for sale and sold items, looks like the seller’s typical MO is to sell polished coins and throw in a couple surprise freebies to get good feedback.

I'm not giving the seller that credit. "NOTE. NO CLEANING/NO CHEMICAL AGENTS ARE EVER USED BY ME. I ALWAYS GENTLY WIPE with Jeweler Cloth to remove fingerprints and / or dust." Stupid as the jeweler cloth idea might be, you don't get a polish like this without a polishing compound of some kind. Now, he does say "by me" which could mean he bought it this way--and that's fine--but that's purposefully deceptive wording if so, even if the pictures make the polishing painfully obvious.

Well, it looks like they shilled it from about $30 to their target sucker price of $300 and then perhaps a sucker was born who bid it up to $305.

Reported for shill bidding. 12 separate bids by the same 0 feedback “buyer”.

  • davewesendavewesen Posts: 6,358 ✭✭✭✭✭

many 0 feedback buyers start like that, not making them 'shills'

I hope the new owner loves this new $305 polished gem. May change his mind after a little education.

    I love this sellers note

Only sold for $43 this time. At least a less expensive lesson this time around.

Seems like this type of thing is becoming more and more common recently. Is no one learning to grade / attempt to authenticate / learn any more before throwing their money away? Too much easy money still floating around?

(now that I think about it.... I've made my share of mistakes before also!)
