The coin has the correct dimensions, weight, and is 90% gold (according to a sigma). According to PCGS this coin is “not genuine”, ouch.
I posted once before about fake Indians and the only thing I questioned on this coin was the weak details especially the lower feathers.
Be careful out there because I think this is a really good fake. 🙂
you had GTG, so most probably are not thinking genuine or not, those well worn feathers had me at the lowest grade here, so perhaps I was the closest to not genuine , cool thread.

With all due respect to pcgs, I would resubmit that key coin again. The pictures might be way off, but it appears authentic.
1madman: I told the owner if it was mine I would send it in to Ngc or anacs as a double check to its authenticity. Yes, I understand I might be throwing some money away but to me its worth a few dollars to get a second opinion because if either grades the coin authenticate then that’s a major home run.
Another alternative is to first take the coin to the icg table at the summer fun show next month and get an authenticity evaluation from Skip. He is one of the best regarding counterfeits. If it’s fake, he will describe the pick up points as to why.

Wow, I would have been quite far off if the first few guessers are close. I guess the incuse designs ARE tough.
For the record, at first glance I was vacillating between 55 and 58.

50.
I'm guessing 55. These are really tough. Do you have the actual grade assigned by a grading service?
I wouldn’t buy any key coins raw, so tough to tell.

Always liked the date !

I always have a tough time grading these. I will venture a 55.

I would guess an AU50 ... Cheers, RickO
There is a reason rarities like that are not certified.
Thank you for your comments.

Not surprised, the mintmark looks wrong and I do not see an important diagnostic.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
I think its a genuine coin with an added mintmark. Definitely could fool a lit of people.

It's a real good fake, with the mintmark softly struck like most of the genuine coins.

Edited to add: PCGS Coinfacts says that ALL GENUINE 1911-D coins have a raised rim in the upper right quadrant on the obverse.
The coin in question here does not.

For lack of a better word, it does look a bit mushy.

very good fake, but not good enough. i was fooled at first glance and had to look at my trusty pcgs counterfeit detection book!

This pcgs graded coin doesn’t have the raised rim either:
https://www.pcgs.com/cert/45501166
This example has a raised rim from 11 to 1 o'clock.
It apparently doesn't know how to tell time on a clock with hands.
