Not sure what this is, but thought some of you may know what this is. The reverse shows what looks like a head feather sticking out of the back of the eagle head. There looks like there is also some raised area on the eagle's beak right where it splits top and bottom.
Don't know if this is die issue or silver debris that got smashed in the die when struct?
Have a look at the photos:

Dont think I have ever seen anything like so far. Seems like an unusual place to happen but I suspect its a die chip.
Looks like a die chip or drop of solder behind the eagles head and a die crack or chip on the beak.

Small die crack through the head. This used to be a common stress point. Have seen similar.
There's some kind of common spitting eagle die crack stress point coming off the beak. Not sure of the year.

Yes, the spitting eagle is the 1983 P. (not similar)

Looks like a die chip behind the head and a die crack on the beak.... JMO... Cheers, RickO
Back when I was collecting die varieties out of circulation and all of the quarters in circulation were silver, it was not rare to see die cracks and/or die chips near the eagle's head and beak and/or along the tops of the wings. As I said, this was a stress point in the design.
I did not bother to save such things back then because nobody cared.
Thanks to all for your input.
