Why did this 1979-D SBA Dollar Sell for so much?

ProofCollectionProofCollection Posts: 6,411 ✭✭✭✭✭

1979-D SBA Dollar PCGS MS-66
Is this a fluke? A case of a "nuclear" bid gone wrong? Or maybe someone thinks it's under graded? Or is this a rare error or variety? PCGS price guide is $34. Sold for $426.

Wide rim is a P variety.

Some things are unexplainable. It only takes 2 bidders that want it badly.

    It needs a bath.

It takes only about 50 mint sets to find a better one.

Maybe it was purchased by the person who paid $364K for a 1938-S dime.

Either the seller knew something about the coin which we don’t or got incredibly lucky which leads me to wonder why someone would consign a $35 coin on a platform which doesn’t provide descriptions. I’m probably contradicting myself based on the auction results but it’s still a head scratcher.

But it doesn’t say wide rim on the holder. Is that variety really worth that? Unbelievable - I guess it takes 2 wild bidders. When I think of what else that money can buy feel sick.

Decimal in the wrong place $426 should have been $42.60.

Perhaps the buyer found a discovery coin for the argument for a 1979-D "wide rim" SBA Dollar?

You know, buyer could be the same one that purchased the 1870-cc DE in 53 for around $1.6M about a 1 1/2 years ago.😉😂

The noblest art is that of making others happy? I agree, very apropos for the bidders to make the seller happy.
