Who has the other half of my 1893s morgan?

PppPpp Posts: 511 ✭✭✭✭

I just picked this up so who has the obverse of the 1893s?
Ok, so I am dreaming that this was an 1893s before someone chopped it in half. Let an old man dream. πŸ™‚
FYI: it only weighs 11.77gms.

Wow... Well, one can dream... I wonder what the backstory on that one is... Cheers, RickO

I'm guessing the obverse was ground down to make a love token or similar which was never completed.

This is my 1893 head scratcher. I recently found a die marker for an 1893 S on the coin and have sent it out for verification. It's a slim possibility, maybe I will get lucky.

We could glue them together and maybe have a better chance at having an 1893 S Morgan. :D

I believe the best I can hope for a PO1 1893 s with a detail of damaged and P01. I can live with that. :D

The half coin appears to be dated before 1886. SF had a habit of re-engraving the leaves in the wreath opposite ON in ONE, and this looks like it might have been re-engraved. They were told to stop in 1881 when they got busted for doing it on $5 and $10 pieces, but kept on doing it on dollars for a few years.

There were only 2 reverse dies used for the 1893 S. Yours doesnt appear to me to match either if you compare the mint mark location and orientation.

My dreaming also includes coin silver utensils from the civil war. I love telling people this is what an 1851 liberty seated dollar looks like in spoon or fork form. πŸ™‚

Lucky is if it is verified that it is a 1893 s morgan, Even though it's damaged severely it would make my thirty five dollar investment well worth the price. If it's not verified it's still worth almost thirty five dollars spot. :)
