A couple of things going on with the 1913-S Buffalo nickel

It appears the profile is doubled yet without the typical clashing.
Second, what the heck is going on with "UNITED" on the reverse?

The San Francisco Mint had problems coining the 1913 Nickels. Most were die clashes, due to feeder problems. Reasons for this include inattention to the feed mechanism by employees who were occupied with other stuff.
Uneven strikes, and strikes that were due to lighter striking pressures abound.
If you look at the tail on the OP coin it looks lightly circulated, but it isn't. Actually it's a decent strike for that year.
The coin is uncirculated. There is no flatness on the hip showing. Possibly some rub evident.
It looks like MDD on the profile.
No doubt it wasn't a good year in 1913 for Nickels from San Francisco. Both Type 1 and Type 2 came out with problems.
I don't know. I've always believed what I wrote here.

Thanks.
I purchased it as an AU earlier today.
I am curious if "UNITED" is mint caused.

Interesting that there's a clash thru UR but the jaw line is clear. IMO. Nice buff! Peace Roy

It looks like an AU... Some interesting features... No idea on the UNITED issue... Cheers, RickO
It was either the coin above or this one, tough the choose:

That's because the Mint did a good job of reworking in that area.
The reverse clash at E PLURIBUS UNUM because of its location through the lettering is more difficult to efface without affecting the boldness of the lettering, and that's why it often shows up.

Hard to tell. Something may have gotten between the die and planchet in that area. The Mint didn't cause it. The strike did.

Good info.
Thanks!
I also notice many of these have a clear mintmark, and many don't- such as my example.

That's because the mintmark on Buffalo Nickels is close to the rim and often gets wear or damage depending on circulation.
More problems in that area tend to occur as more wear flattens out the rim.
