VaultBox Sample Slab

UpGrayeddUpGrayedd Posts: 652 ✭✭✭✭✭

Who knew these existed? This is currently listed on ebay. Not my coin, and I'm not sure what to think. I don't know that I understand the point, and it almost seems "manufactured" if you know what I mean, but it is interesting.

David Schwager (who wrote the most recent sample slab book) posted about them in February of this year. It was available at the Long Beach show.

And yes you can argue it is "manufactured" but a case can be made that it is an example of a new slab (so fits the definition). Normally when I hear "manufactured" sample slab, I associate that with the Fast Coin PCGS sample slabs (which they are still selling in quantity on their eBay account).

Thanks for the heads up. I have a copy of David's book (2nd edition), but I didn't know the third edition was out yet. I guess I need to go buy a copy.

With regards to being "manufactured" I understand your point, and I don't necessarily disagree, however, I would agree more if it had been a NGCX sample slab as opposed to a VaultBox sample. I wonder who the lucky recipients were?

    Schwager# (3rd Edition): NGC-Ag1-9-3.
NGC database says an edition of 20 pieces.
    Reported by Michael Kittle.

I think $600 is more than a little dear. I do like the next listing that fleaBay found in my search...

I agree with you and @ricko, $600 is very optimistic. If I wanted to spend that much I would just buy a VaultBox. ;)
If it had been more realistic I might have made an offer.

Some of the Whatnot slabs sell for anywhere from $100 - $300 (some people just love to buy the holder vs the coin!), but $600 seems outrageous IMO.

    Seems reasonable to me 🫣

That is a good point-being an NGCX sample would be more of a true sample slab.

That NGCX sample slab is pretty cool. Love NGCX and what they are doing to move some types of numismatic items into the 10 point grading system. I'd pay $50 for it but not $600..............

@BStrauss3 is the 3rd Edition currently available for purchase anywhere? I couldn't find it on ebay and I don't have Instagram. I did find sampleslabs.info after a quick Google search, but it just said ordering instructions would be available shortly.

I am still working to get everything entered into the database. I've set a cut-off of 3-31-2023 (before CSNS but after Winter FUN) and then I'll have to do a review pass, editing, etc. - oh and there are still some issues with the generation of pages based on the size of the photographs (I think I've solved that one, finally, but not 100% sure).

At last count, there are something over 1,000 items now in the database.
