Bank Runs from a CoinRollHunter's point of view.

Hi again,
Just a thought? Do you guys do this as well? While visiting banks for Half Dollars/Quarters or whatever tickles your fancy. When I am successful, I immediately make a quick search in my car. Searching for anything good. All rolls I just received. Then, take these same checked coins to my next bank visit. Cash in, then again. Asking for any Halves/Quarters. If successful once again? I go to my car and make a quick search once again! Then, onto the next bank.
lol. Do you guys do as I do?
:D Sure, it sounds crazy but I save a possible "skunk" at home!
:D
Many times I do eventually find some goodies
before I even get home!
Mind you, I visit about 4-6 banks during this task.
;)

Now, on my way home to search some more recent visits!

I coin roll search in my car while driving to next bank, eating a burger and texting the bank to see what rolls they have ready. I don't waste anytime. I can hit 15 banks a day.

Some i even do a slow roll as they throw the coins into my vehicle, saves even more time.

    You're right!
You most certainly got me beat.
    Mmmmmm. a burger, huh?

Are we saving 1987-P's these days? Wouldn't expect a premium on them. Still north of 2,000,000.

you must have one of those self driving teslas that you bought the profit you made from roll searching.

I think @mark_dak 's point was that they are still very easy to find. For example, here is a lot of 10 on eBay for #75 delivered, plus 10 '87-D halves, plus the rest of the coins, envelopes, and CoAs from the mint sets: https://ebay.com/itm/385468133758

None of which is to say that getting one for face value isn't a great deal!

Never 'early searched' before getting home... In fact, I have a couple of half dollar rolls I got about four years ago, that I still have not searched... will have to remember to do that. Maybe this weekend... Cheers, RickO

I've never searched in the car, but i definitely always chose to see if the coins were circulated or not before i left the property. I would normally have to tell the old lady behind the counter to take the 40 pound box of quarters back because they're brand new o:)

I miss ordering boxes a week in advance. I'd get 1-2 half boxes, 1 quarter box, 1 nickel, 1 penny. Never liked searching dimes. It's too hard on the eyes.

The 4 banks I used to rotate no longer take orders for halves (would love to know the reason....). But I can order anything else.

If i need a fix now, i'll normally just get a strap of 100 $1's and just go through the serial numbers.

@OAKSTAR - I take all of mine back to a smaller bank who has a large coin counting machine. No fees. I opened an account there solely for that reason.

I randomly take them back to 4 banks I visit regularly. They seem to be alright with that.
Occasionally, I would travel a little farther to a bank or two, I hardly go to.
I love returning the coins to a bank that has the self service machines. This way, I get to check their return bin. Many times, I find nice little treasures in them. I only know of two, that has this option. And those are the ones that I have to travel a bit. The rest are behind the tellers.

It sounds like you are using the same banks for pickup and dumping. I definitely do not do that.

Same here. The quickest way to piss-off a bank, IMO.

Many times, I mix it up too. When I dump my coins. I make that the final transaction.
Get out of their hair quick. Then, I would go to one of my other banks to pickup a box, without the dumping of coins. Then, get out of their hair. Hardly, I would make both transactions at the same bank.
Out of ALL the banks I go to,15, maybe only one person would give me that evil eye!

I love getting lucky, but I feel for the person bringing in 1960s silver proof coins to the bank. They'd never bring a $20 saint to the bank or a 5 oz ATB to the bank.

That 1987-P Kennedy Half was not intended for circulation. They were only included in Mint and Souvenir Sets.

The banks here want me to have an account. I carry a couple of gift cards, and BU AW quarters in airtites to gift when I see that tellers feel short with me. One of the tellers asked me how to start collecting on a return visit.

You should be cautious about searching through money while parked in the bank parking lot, or anywhere in your car for that matter. You never know who is watching and could potentially follow you home. From what I gather with your posts over the years you have a pattern when it comes to searching and getting your cup of coffee. You should also be cautious of some tellers. as well as bank patrons overhearing your conversation with the tellers. Carrying out boxes of money out of a bank can be a bad thing.
The bank I frequent for business I see this ole timer pull up to the bank, open the hatch to his vehicle and carry in several searched cloth bank bags of halves to return.
You also shouldn't post your activity on this site. Just my thoughts.

I only get coin rolls at a few banks and order coins in 2 banks, but I have at least 12 dump bank branches. Banks do not like half dollars or dollar coins as they usually just have to send them back to the federal reserve, so I spread these around and only try to limit my visits to less then once a month.. Two of my dump banks love quarters and are happy to see me when I bring them in. So, they get most of the quarters. Another one of my dump banks is closing in June, so on the day before they close, I will go in and ask them if I can get any coins that they have laying around. This worked last time and I got over $2000 in coins. Yes, I need a large sum of cash to do this, but I will load my account early and withdraw what I need on the right day.
