I left empty handed today, but the big shock for me was the MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1772-Mo MF. Mexico City Mint. Charles III. NGC AU-53 that sold for $9000

Perhaps the biggest shock would have been to the SB cataloger who put a $300-450 estimate on it. What are we missing that makes that a $9000 coin? Was this active bidding or nuclear bids in a MAD event?

I’m very curious as well - was watching this coin.
Love the eye appeal but not to the tune of $9k - I’m new to this area is collecting and obviously I’m missing something!
$10,800 for a common and unattractive pillar in 62 is just crazy

There are 2 varieties for 1772 Charles III 8 Reales, both with inverted assayer initials and mintmark. The difference is that one assayer combination reads MF and the other FM. MF is the much scarcer of the two. Since these parts of the legend are inverted to begin with, there's often confusion with regards to which variety is which. For many years PCGS had 2 coins in their population report as 'MF' that were, in fact, misattributed FM's. Last year the pop reports were corrected and a new, accurately attributed MF was graded F12.
NGC has 11 coins certified as MF with 5 in AU and a single MS61 in UNC grades.
Yonaka lists the 72-MF as Uncommon with 15 observed examples.
I've been trying to add an attractive example of this variety for a number of years and have passed on a few examples offered by Cayon, Aureo and Heritage before because i didn't like the eye-appeal. This one checked all the boxes for me, but I'm not currently in the point in life where $9k+ is a justified expense for a variety.

Can anyone explain this one? It's not even eye appealing.

There are about 100 certified examples across both services, BN and RB, in all grades. I paid $125 for my raw example which ended up as a NGC MS63RB.
The estimate at $300-$450 really fails to pass the straight face test. This is a very rare variety that seems to have been missed... but not by the auction participants
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
Hence why I don't collect pillars (1732-1771) in high grade I rather own what I can afford. But I understand why someone would want MS examples if they can afford them and why not if it is chump change for them go for it.

Maybe some new blood that are collecting coins from Latin America? I mean there are more and more people from Latin America than ever now living in the USA and that segment of the population is just growing. At some point one would have to assume some of them will want to collect their on heritage vs USA coinage.

Guanajuato hooknecks are pretty scarce. How many have you seen lately?
It must be the case no logical explanation otherwise.

Maximilian is very hot now, especially in Mexico. And there was a high-grade Go Max Peso that hammered at $60k in NY. All that probably helped. Plus, it has a PL look to the reverse (don't know how real that is).
I bet it went to Mexico.

I purchased the Hookneck book about 2 years ago so I know that some are much harder to locate than others. Just figured some here may have never seen one so I posted it. Did not think the sale price was out of the norm it is just a coin you don't see every day. I also find the it to be a nice looking coin for the grade.

Did you know there is a supplement to the Hookneck book? IIRC it’s 12-20 pages softbound.
Probably scarcer than the book itself and has updated info.
Yes it came with it when I purchased the book it has a white cover and pages. It was sealed with the Hookneck book. Purchased it from World Numismatics LLC.

Won a consolation prize. Was the under bidder on a few of the nicer key dates that went for strong money. Ended up getting this 1887 AS to not get completely shut out.
Was able to get this one today as well as a group of Peru pillar minors
I'm BACK!!! Used to be Billet7 on the old forum.
Wow. No update included with my purchase from WN LLC
Maybe your copy was described as used? Mine said brand new and said it came with the update in the description. I doubt very much they did it intentionally I never had any problems with them on any of my book orders.

I was absolutely crushed in today’s session. I bid very aggressively above recent comps but was nuked. There were some lots with outstanding eye appeal.
I got two today. 1543 Saxony Thaler for my Prime Number set, filling another hole in the first half of the 16th century, and a 1776 Silver Ducat from Zeeland, which I bought during a workout class during a set of Russian twists. I was thinking about a 1919 Rupee, since it's made from Pittman Act Morgan dollars, but it shot up to more than what I wanted to pay and was a lower priority.

I picked up this Athelred II penny. It's damaged, AU details, but I liked the look.

This one! 1785 is a hard date to find in mint or near mint condition.
MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1785-Mo FM. Mexico City Mint. Charles III. NGC AU-58.
KM-106.2a ; FC-70 ; Yonaka-M8-85; Cal-1127. This gently circulated example exhibits boldly struck devices with even wear primarily contained to the high points. The surfaces displays a thin layer of pale tone with richer coloration near the edge above the bust. Wholesome with a decent look, a charming example with a full button.
My purchases showed up this week. Shot pictures this morning.
1543 Saxony Thaler for the Prime Number set. Just updated the album, but the registry people need to fix the diameter.
1776 Silver Ducat from Zeeland because I thought it was cool.

Great addition! Definitely a tough date.
