A neat 1842 Contemporary Counterfeit Seated Dime

NumisOxideNumisOxide Posts: 10,997 ✭✭✭✭✭

One my most recent contemporary counterfeits I picked up. I got lucky again and picked it up for a reasonable price via BIN. This one was struck with hand cut dies, very crude/goofy looking liberty and the reverse lettering is uneven. Love these bogus/ whacky looking ones. Definitely circulated for awhile. Enjoy!

That's pretty cool. Was it offered as a CF?

No, the seller listed it as a possible "trial piece" or "pattern". That's what the flip said. From looking at their other listings, don't believe they deal much in coins.

I sold one of these a while back, it brought good money. I bought mine as a regular old business strike lol.

That is cool and compared to the bust halves, these are as rare as hen's teeth.

Gerry's site has a pretty good list of known contemporary counterfeit seated dimes, including your 1842.

I have a Seated quarter, clear fake, bought in a lot for silver, at the time, 75 cents, no date- or not a clear date.

What an excellent piece! That is a spectacular contemporary counterfeit. I wonder whether any survive in better condition.

I probably bought it if you sold it on eBay, that's where I picked mine up last year. I love the hand-made counterfeits, this one has a ton of character.

Those certainly are neat. I remember when no one collected them and you could get them for a song.

    Cool !

  • Very interesting! Contemporary counterfeits are such a fun and interesting area of numismatics. No piece is ever really identical.

Yeah I'm fairly sure it was you. Think I congratulated you on the purchase when you posted it here? If I'm not imagining that.
