Doubled profiles on Bust halves question

ManorcourtmanManorcourtman Posts: 8,077 ✭✭✭✭✭

Not my series so I have a question for the experts. The 1823, Overton 111, bust halves are known for having doubled profiles. Does anyone have an explanation as to how this doubling occurred or what created it? I attached a pic with the doubled profile. It's a pretty cool variety!

Interesting. I'm thinking that the mint press did a major stuttered strike due to a geared malfunction of some sort. That's all I got. Peace Roy

Worn out set screw allowing the die to shift.

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

Very interesting since it seems isolated to the profile, and that in a vertical offset. Perhaps @CaptHenway can offer some enlightenment here. Cheers, RickO
