Who knew Stacks/Bowers had an auction yesterday afternoon? My pick up below Greysheet!

I only found out by accident...clicked on a SB listing on the PCGS price guide the day before. Weird day and start time. Almost no bidding .....I picked up his nice 1856 LC N-2 variety in a very late die state. Grellman mentions this state as being the latest with what appears to be damage actually a low spot running all the way from the I in Liberty down the bust to almost obliterating the 8 in the date. A nice addition to my Late Date Newcomb set. Couldn't pass it up at the price.

This post formatted weird....scrolling words. I just had an update to my laptop..probably the reason. BTW she is PCGS MS62. A good chance this is the finest known for this very LDS. I checked all my reference catalogues and none had a die state this late.

Very nice. Didn’t seem to be much live bidding in this week’s Stacks auctions.

    Congrats!
I was following the auction-a few items went above what I expected but some went for less.

Saw the auction. Lots I was interested in were prebid above my top levels.

Nice coin, is the prominent obverse strike-through noted on the holder?

Neat pickup, especially if you got a great price.

I think the obverse strike-through might be why you got it for under GS.
Still a very nice coin but that is somewhat distracting.

They are too complicated compared to others. I’ve stopped visiting.

Edited to add context since I’m not here throwing stones:
    1) cell phone access you can’t see entire coin description
    2) everything is by lots
    3) search engine is antiquated
    4) they want my bank account on a paper application? Get out of here. I bought from overseas with no credit limits or “applications”
    5) dealer references? Is this from the 80s?
6). I’ve called them to discuss these challenges to no avail
    7) gold as a percentage of spot? No thanks.

Just too far out of bounds. I can’t see new collectors migrating that way at all. Big turn off for someone who just wants to click and bid/buy.

I don’t follow this at all - lot of misinformation here.

I was not required to provide dealer references or bank details to register and bid at Stacks. They do have a credit/bid limit, so if you are chasing five figure+ items, you may need to establish credit - that’s not my playing field.

Every auction house organized its sales by lots - not sure what you are complaining about.

Gold as a percentage of spot is for precious metals auctions only and is not that uncommon among auction houses. Precious metal auctions are separate from the auction where the OP won his large cent.

    My statements are accurate

Over $5k you need to submit an application.

Complaining? I’m making statements. This is my experience. In my opinion their site is very behind when it comes to user experience.

    To the OP nice coin.

This is misinformation - not accurate at all. I’m not commenting on your opinions - just correcting your ‘facts’.

I think you are likely confusing the Precious Metals Auctions with their normal coin auctions.

    I’m not confusing anything
Anywhere you’re trying to sell me something as a percentage of base doesn’t register with me personally, and I’m guessing it doesn’t with many others as well.

That has nothing to do with the auction discussed in this thread. You’re hijacking the thread to complain about Stacks precious metals auctions - which are highly specific and not related to their coin / numismatics auctions at all.

This is a ridiculous complaint about the metals auction. Bidding 99% of melt with zero buyer's premium is a problem because...??? It's bullion.

Dealers are effectively doing the same thing when they quote bid/ask for eagles, maples, etc at spot +/- X. Very common in auction, wholesale and retail venues to price bullion items based on the price of bullion!

I think Jonny is right here. They ask to much and put limits. Is the only house which ask me to much.
I understand check my credit card No and Name. Do not ask me more. I try a few years ago, and was: Do not took Dinners Club and ask me written statement from American Platinum and Dinners Club about limits??? LOL.

Conclusion: they are the only which ask this.

I’ve had no problem bidding on numismatic items at Stacks. Large decent pics, easy bidding process and prompt shipment.
