My Friend Knocked My Indian Cent Registry Set Down a Notch, and I Feel Joy!

When my son was a teenager, and he beat me for the very first time in a game of Ping Pong, I felt joy! (I’m a strong Ping Pong player).

When my grandson was about 14, and beat me in a 40-yard dash, I felt joy! (As a youngster, I had excellent speed in sprints, and both my son and daughter set several school records in Track at High School and College).

One of my mentors for my unique Indian Head Cent set just listed his IHC set in the PCGS Registry. His set is ranked #4 Current, and #10 All-Time (for the CAC composite IHC set, where every coin must have a CAC sticker, he's #2). I got knocked down a notch from #6 current to #7, and in the CAC composite sets from #2 current to #3. Despite moving down one point, I feel the same joy that I described above.

I'm so very happy for him. He uses the humorous name "Working for Pennies" for his Registry. I know how hard he's worked for so many years to put his set together. He's still shy, so you can't see any detail or photos of the coins in his set. As such, I'll have to brag for him, lol. Every coin in his set merits a CAC sticker, and the vast majority are double-stickered, as they also have Rick Snow's Eagle Eye Photo Seal. All of his Bronze Indians have the RED suffix, except for one.

He introduced himself to me several years ago via message on this forum (he doesn't post - yet) when he saw my beginning IHC set had real nice coins. Or it might have been a message from the Registry, as I allow messages from the public via the Registry.

We became friends, and he mentored me in putting together my unique IHC set. One example of his help is he immediately brought to my attention when Copperindian retired his very highly ranked IHC set. I did some detective work, contacted Copperindian, and I purchased seven of his beauties before he had time to consign his collection.

He also sells me some of his dupes as he upgrades his own coins. Yes, that's mutually beneficial, but I'm still appreciative.

As much time as I put into this wonderful hobby, I'm amazed at the time and research he does. He studies virtually every auction result going back years, of high-grade Indians, so he knows which collection has which coin and how much it sold for. He watches the Registry rankings of incomplete sets, so he knows who's up and coming, and their "habits". He studies so much, sometimes I think he's figured out the underwear size of everyone that partakes in the IHC Registry, lol.

Congratulations to my true friend, whom I am so happy for!

Steve

@winesteven ... Great story and congratulations to your friend. This is a marvelous hobby with many aspects. We have many great numismatists on this board... I hope your friend joins here soon, since it seems he could contribute a lot of information in his area of expertise. Cheers, RickO

Great and typical for you story. Thanks for sharing. Makes me wish to have known him and you 30 years ago when building my modest AU/BU collection of Indians. Your set is still very special regardless of point drop.

@winesteven, congratulations to you and your mentor. Sounds like a wonderful mutual relationship. While I’m not even close to being in that camp, I can appreciate it and you. Great job to your friend.

@winesteven Neat post :) Not just with coin collecting but in life it's not often that people aren't concerned mostly about themselves. It's nice to hear the joy you have in your friend's accomplishment. I'm sure he appreciates your friendship and would reciprocate.

Great story, Steve. Congratulations to your friend for a great set.

You are a true friend as you feel more joy for their accomplishment than you do for your own.

Great read and the right attitude to have about the registry imo. Congrats to your friend on his set, I do hope that he will add photos and comments to his set. My only complaint with any registry is sets without photos and comments, that is like looking at a blank book.

Actually, his set is intentionally not set up for public viewing, so others cannot see the grades of the individual coins. While you and I feel different with our sets than my friend, he has his reasons.
