1856 (S-3) Flying Eagle Cent
![Eldorado9](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/userpics/X06UQ9ARPCBL/n7MOJ002AQFCZ.jpg)
I'm beyond thrilled to have recently acquired this gorgeous little S-3 flyer. The S-3 is the original made to be passed out to congress, as a way of promoting the new smaller diameter cent. There were subsequent restrikes made to satisfy collector demand which was very high at the time. Technically the coin is considered a pattern, as the Flying Eagle cent made it's official debut in 1857. It's a coin I have dreamed about for decades, ever since I saw it in my 1972 RS Yeoman Redbook. Dreams come true!

@Eldorado9 , spectacular, and double stickered to boot! One can easily see how it merits both stickers! And the plus is most deserved! Here’s mine, almost as nice:

Wow some real beauties posted here! Thanks all for posting! @winesteven Your 56 is an absolute gem to my eye, and of the quality we expect from your collection! @jfriedm56 That coin is simply a moose....with gem eye appeal...That's a 63? All nice coins guys.
Some of us can only dream. Congrats!

@winesteven , Steve just wondering if your Proof 64 was struck thru with a thread below the eagle's claw and tail feathers? I've seen similar proofs before. Your '56 is a beauty too!
Yes, you are absolutely correct. I bought it from a dealer that was unaware it’s an S-4, a tougher variety. I confirmed with Rick Snow that the thread struck through was not problematic. When Rick saw the dealer photos, he let me know that if I don’t buy it, he will.
Thanks for your kind words.

Gorgeous coin! That coin is on my want list. May be quite a while before I get one. Congrats.
I agree.
Not only is it an 1856, but it's also a knock dead beautiful specimen.
Be proud. Rightly so!

Total perfection...Thanks for posting those amazing ultra-gems. I just looked through your Registry set, and it is a tour de force of Flyers....Great dedication...Well done.
Yes, absolutely spectacular! However, if you really want to blow your mind, look at all of @DMWJR ’s other sets - Flying Eagles, Indian Cents, and Lincoln’s - out of this world! Unimaginable!!!!

Will do. After I sold most of my Snow FE varieties (thanks Rick!), I decided to follow 1856's down the rabbit hole as just patterns to go along with my one cent patterns. I did pick up that PT-23 in CSNS. Seemed like a pretty good deal to me. Same for the J-302 and J-357. Both sold for less than the last time they were offered.
WOW
I can only hope to own 1

I remember Lakesamman had a flying eagle patter that did not have a date on it, very cool to view.
Here is an "1856" small cent that I can afford:
@DMWJR your ‘56s are quite impressive! That’s a collection to be extremely proud of. Congratulations on such a monumental accomplishment!

I would love to have the one Lakes had. There was another beautiful J-179 that sold last year too. The only dateless I can contribute is a J-178 PF45. It hasn't seen the light of day in maybe 25 years? Provenance goes back to 1865 I believe![ ](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
