Sorry to hear. Am I the only one who's noticed that it seems the majority of issues like this happen with FedEx as the carrier?
Have you notified NCIC? (Numismatic Crime Information Center)
RIP Mom- 1932-2012
bummer, sorry to hear that (again)![:( :(](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/frowning.png)
@EspressoLogic.... Welcome aboard. Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Please report the theft to NCIC as mentioned above. Certainly members will be watching for any to turn up. Cheers, RickO
I wonder if a gold (silver) metal detector comes into play with this type of theft???
Doug at NCIC has been notified. Very upsetting. I waited two years for the opportunity to purchase these coins.
This is terrible to read and I wish you success in getting the coins back. Might I also suggest that you link the auction lots and add images of each coin so that we might have a better idea of what we are looking for? This will get much more exposure and many more eyes on your coins.

A company I deal with told me that they have had a lot of coins go missing from the Memphis hub.
For me, USPS registered mail only.

I had the same thing happen to me. Was sending a scarce Large Cent to be attributed by PCGS. Package arrived empty. I got my $$$ back from FEDEX as I had insured it for what I paid $460....would have been CC#3 for the variety and probably worth closer to 2K. Still stings....will only be sending under $100 coins to PCGS to burn up my 4 vouchers and won't be declaring the value. I think declaring the value is a tip off and type..i.e. "collectible" is a sign to a would be crook.
I feel your pain.
I think the OP was the intended recipient.

So sorry for this. Coins like those aren't exactly easily replaced. Best of luck. There's a small chance you'll get them back.
Sad way to introduce yourself. I welcome you to the forum and truly hope your items are recovered. Hopefully, you had insurance that would help the blow.

StacksBowers reimbursed me as soon as it was determined that FedEx employees had stolen the shipment. They were great to deal with. FedEx was a freaking nightmare.
First, I’m sorry for your loss, but kudos to StacksBowers they are a quality outfit.
It's not just you, the last three stolen shipments I've read about on forums or Facebook were Fedex. Not that UPS is any better but at least with registered theres a chain of custody. I just got my Hugh Wood policy that covers me for shipments sent through USPS, so now I'm fully covered to use Priority or Express without paying exorbitant costs for insurance on every label. If I didn't have that, I would just stick to registered for any higher value shipment.

sad....
When verifying the PCGS #s I posted, there is a link to the Stack’s Bowers Auction lots and plenty of pictures. These were very nice coins. Depressing.
What a horrible loss.
That seems like really big ticket material. Stuff big ticket like that prefer buy at shows. Was the shipment insured? What chance you have for cost recovery?
Not sure if stacks, Heritage et al , list their names on the shipping labels ... but if they do they should stop
On a similar note, I had a US pattern from stacks stolen within the UPS system 2 years ago ... never to be found. While payment was quickly refunded I feel a real lost as most likely I will never have the. Opportunity to acquire one again
Wish you luck

That's probably because the Mint ships through there
So just so I understand, these were coins you won at S&B and they shipped the coins to you and that shipment got stolen?

Yes. Stolen by a FedEx employee.
Do they have someone in custody?

Makes me want to get busy again on inventing the stink packet that only the intended recipient can safely disarm before opening the mailed package with valuables in it. The electronics are there to do such a thing. Imagine a mail thief opening a package and being delivered a horrendously stinking surprise along with the goodies in the package. Banks have got exploding die packets for money packs why can't coin collectors have exploding stink packets for their coins?

Welcome aboard and feel bad for your loss.
Keeping fingers crossed that hopefully something can be recouped.
The most recent from my neck of the woods is Cocaine being stolen at the post office by an employee

I don't know how FedEx is still in business. They are the absolute worst and their employees don't seem to care. I refuse to use them if I have a choice.
People complain about the government, but the USPS is far superior to FedEx and UPS for that matter.

The stink packet would be designed to deliver a NON-LETHAL substance that it is extremely foul smelling. The lingering odor emanating from the thief would get the attention of the nose of anyone who works with or around the thief. The thief would be in real danger of being reported to company officials for stinking so much and an investigation would ensue. Of course, an awareness campaign would be in place so that honest employees know what's up when a co-worker shows up for work smelling so unforgettingly foul.
Rotten eggs , emitting tiny amount of H2S, hydrogen sulfide gas, would smell like fine perfume compared to the agent I have in mind to load the proprietary stink packets with.

If mailing a raw coin, grade it very conservatively and determine its value using a price guide that shows full high retail value. That way you at least make a nice profit when the shipper steals it from you.

Many years ago, I worked for a company that shipped very valuable packages through FedEx and the driver was allowed inside the business to scan all packages.
They could see what was being shipped a lot of the time. I often wondered what would stop that driver from pulling over somewhere after picking up and going through opening, stealing, and resealing the boxes.
My hunch is that the employee that stole the coins used a hand held detector to find them via the radio embedded anti-theft technology. Need to start wrapping all such slabs in aluminum foil.![:) :)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)

^this^ Would not necessarily eliminate theft by the dumbest of thieves but the smarter ones know the risk of getting caught is there so would let a package through if not sure the reward is commensurate with the risk.

@EspressoLogic I hope they find your coins. Very scary that this sort of thing can happen so easily.

We have a Fed Ex hub in our city. Several years ago they were having a problem with packages not being delivered. Tracked to that hub. Cameras and investigation revealed a huge problem with multiple workers caught. No mention of coins but alot of packages from Cabelas, Bass Pro, Circuit City etc. were targeted. Multiple charges filed and terminations. Two years later, same thing happened. I'm hearing they still have a problem. Sad, very sad.
