I bought an old catalog (1936) a few years ago, and found this clipping tucked in the Private Gold Coins pages.
The pencil mark is the date Jan. 27 -1944. I assume the clipping is from a Philadelphia newspaper.
I was able to find the sale on the Newman portal.

with the date of the sale the previous day, Wednesday, January 26, 1944.
The item in question is lot 34
with a few more details about the variety: 1851 gold $50 Augustus Humbert fineness 887, with "50" on the reverse.
Looks like the purchaser was also the cataloger. Philip H. Ward, Jr.
Ward's Estate had Stack's sell his coin collection from April 30-May 2, 1964, but I couldn't find this coin in the sale.

So that's about as far as I can go with the provenance. Maybe it could be matched to one of the coins known today. Let me know if you own it and want the clipping

Interesting history... I wonder who owns it today... Hope you make contact, would be a good addition to the coin. Cheers, RickO
