    Both 66, CAC on the Morgan, Peace probably won't make the trip because I think it's a C coin.

    @winesteven
    That is a very impressive group of Morgan's. I can only hope to achieve a collection like that before I pass. 👏
    I edited this to add that I visited your PCGS registry sets. You have a sensational collection of United States coinage. I highly commend your efforts to acquire and complete so many beautiful sets. It must have been a lifetime effort. I for one appreciate all of the contributions you make to this forum. The knowledge you must have I can only imagine. Your continued guidance and participation is what makes this forum so special.
    Just amazing!

    Your words are more than very kind. Here are a few comments/thoughts:

    1. My knowledge is a LOT less than you give me credit for. Most of what I’ve learned was from reading and participating on this forum. I’m not blowing smoke - that’s the truth!
    2. I never buy coins for the main purpose of moving up in rank in the Registry sets. Instead, I decide for each slot in a set the amount of dollars I’m comfortable spending, and I buy the grade that fits. For my Silver Classic Commem 50 coin Type Set (currently ranked #13), more than half the coins are currently valued at only three figures each. Of the remaining coins in that set, most are valued at only slightly more than $1,000.
    3. Another tip using that Commem Type Set as an example: Whenever I upgrade a coin, I ONLY buy that upgrade if I feel the eye appeal is nicer than the coin being upgraded. In that Commem set there are several low to mid three figure coins that I’ve been trying to upgrade for over two years. I’ve diligently searched and seen (mainly photos) literally many hundreds of those coins in the grades I want, many at very fair prices, but I’ve passed, since the eye appeal was not what I want! Don’t give me credit for knowing this - I learned this from one of the principals of a major firm that I buy some of my coins from.
    4. While I’m blessed to be in a position to be able to spend more money on this wonderful hobby than the majority of collectors, I can’t even come close to competing with “The Big Boys”. They are in the deep end of the pool while I’m not. What I’m REALLY proud of is despite roughly 90% of my coins being valued at three and four figures each, 93% of my sets are ranked from #3 - #12, and the majority of those sets are ranked from #3 - #6 (I have a couple of Modern sets tied for #1). Of the 10% or so of my coins currently valued at five figures, almost all of those are valued from $10,000 to $15,000.
    5. What’s helped me in the rankings is that roughly 60% - 65% of my coins eligible for a plus grade have plus grades (coins graded 69 and 70 are ineligible for a plus). Of those, I estimate I bought about half of them with a plus, and the other half got the plus via Reconsideration when PCGS was not as tight as they’ve been for the past eight months or so.
    6. Here’s a BIG tip: the main auction houses make available at no charge their numismatists. Despite todays high resolution technology with photos, nothing beats looking at a coin in hand. Two of the auction houses I buy many of my coins from have me pass on roughly 80% of the coins I ask about where the photos to me look terrific. That unbiased advice is invaluable!!!!
    7. Eye appeal is so VERY personal. I fit in the large minority but silent group that prefers their silver coins (especially 20th Century silver and also Morgan and Peace Dollars) to be fully lustrous with little or no toning, often looking like they were made yesterday, just as their designers envisioned they would look as they came off the press! Yes, knowledgeable numismatists and collectors stress “originality “, and there’s no doubt the vast majority of my silver coins have been dipped at some point. Apparently though, they were dipped gently enough that every coin of mine eligible for a CAC sticker has a CAC sticker!
    8. While I personally like the structure of Registry sets, don’t feel bound by that. Collect whatever YOU like.

    Steve
