eBay "crap"

Russell12Russell12 Posts: 255 ✭✭✭✭

Does it cost to post a coin for sale? I hate when I see things like this. Maybe there should be a higher fee to post with most of the fee refunded when the coin sells. Even though I am mad about this, I still laugh at "rainbow toned".

"Crap" is right I would be ashamed to even put anything like that for sale, Nothing is rare or worth the prices that are listed!

$400 obo. Seems like a good deal and I’m sure it’s natural toning. I wish I was collecting nickels. If it was a Roosie dime with that amazing look I don’t think I would bother with an offer. I’d just pay up.

I think that Ebay account might have been hijacked. If you look at the other things for sale, they are nearly ALL pocket change, modern coins for sale for crazy high dollar amounts. It only costs the seller IF the coin sells. So, posting all those crazy ads will not cost anything to the seller. Unfortunately, I see this kind of stuff pretty regularly.

Take a look at this uber common Lincoln Cent, sorted by highest first, scroll down and check out the listings at insane prices.
Every common date cent has listings for the same sort of garbage,

That's typical for ebay. You have to wade through alot of garbage to find the gems.

It's not just coins, you can find inflated prices on just about anything on ebay from some sellers.

Sometimes ridiculously priced items like this are used as a form of money laundering.

Although for penny ante piddlies like this, why bother?
Better off using real estate for any large crooks.

I finally found a dealer to help me complete my "parking lot collection." Thank you! B)

I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.

Take the bad with the good.

Ebay is still a very good place for me to buy and sell.

Definitely not as good as yesteryear, but I'm still a very active member.

Looks scammy. Whenever I see a user ID with totally random number-letter-symbol combos I think that it's likely a throwaway account they're using to squeeze what money they can before it inevitably gets revoked and/or the negatives start piling up.

That was my first inclination. Seller has almost 100 feedback and no negs. However, no recent transactions. Everything else recently listed by this seller looks like a parking lot find.

He does allow "make an offer"... how about 4 cents, and free shipping ...

Sadly, eBay seems to be pretty much "brain dead".

Who cares? Millions of things get listed on ebay every year. Why fixate on 1 item?

Probably a small number but you still have to be on your guard when shopping on eBay. Caveat emptor.

You can report it and have it removed. When you list a coin as PCGS you must show the holder.
I don't think that anyone will buy it, but you never know.

No unless you list over a certain number of items, listing is free.

Just simply ignore such listings. What's really heartbreaking is the fact that if they rip off the wrong people, that seller might end up with an entirely different alloy of metal than what they sold. And you just can't tell these types this truth. Burn people and you'll eventually get burned yourself.

I think it extremely unlikely that the account has been hijacked. When someone hijacks an account, they tend to price the listings at low or bargain levels, in order to encourage transactions. The listings in question have the opposite effect and aren’t apt to result in sales.

A (somewhat) free, easy, open marketplace will enable material like that to be listed quite easily, but also enable a significant piece to be listed that would otherwise sit in an attic or be forgotten.

check out his completed listings, he actually sold 4 things including a 1943-S penny for 73 dollars plus shipping, the coin would never even get a straight grade, i would not even pay the 5.25 shipping charge for it
