I believe B. Max Mehl was still advertising for a 1913 when I was a kid. Stimulated the hobby for sure, although boards may have had the most to so with the widespread craze in the '30's. I still have some partial 30's cent rolls that I collected years ago. If late 30's 65RD cents ever get up there off they go to PCGS.

That article might be the least informative ever written. It sheds no light on who struck them, why,
or how they left the Mint. Also, it was known where the 5 were in 1938 although maybe it wasn't "generally known" but the article is of no help with that either.

Tough critic. Totally unrelated, March of Dimes started in'38.

    67+ CAC

That's the point of the article. The 5 coins have been known about since 1920.

What? you don't believe that those coins "walked out" of the Mint?

The point of the article is to tell you nothing?

Actually, the origin of the coins was somewhat controversial into more modern times. Some people thought they were made clandestinely at the Mint. At one point, some people thought they were made outside of the Mint including, IIRC, the Secret Service. There's no evidence that they were "die trials", though that was another theory.

But the article basically says, here's some 1913 Liberty nickels that no one knows where they came from. And some people know where the 5 are now, but I'm not going to share that information with you.

Well... I, for one, still look for a 1913 Liberty nickel when I attend flea markets, yard sales, estate sales.... Number six 'might' be out there.... Keep the faith - ;) Cheers, RickO
