San Francisco Type 1 Double Eagle Collection
There have been a few upgrades, a few cross overs and a few new TrueView's taken since the last time I posted about the S Mint Type 1 Double Eagle collection. The goal is for each coin to have seen significant circulation but remain free of significant "problems". I find the thought of where these giant gold coins have traveled, how many stage coaches they've been in, what they have done and who's hands they could possibly have passed through to be mesmerizing. While I can appreciate the beauty of well preserved MS examples I'm infinitely more drawn to the romance behind the history of the circulated coins. I often find myself staring at them and daydreaming about their adventures.
I think the collection is in a pretty stable state now and don't foresee any changes unless some examples with a bean that look better than coins without a bean pop up. At some point I'll probably submit the CAC'd coins to PCGS for that in-slab TrueView service now that I'm aware of it.
The elephant in the room is the lack of the Type 1 66-S. While I'm not ruling out obtaining one someday it's not something I'm actively putting as a goal for the small collection. There are only 8 PCGS examples existing that would fall within my budget so I'm not holding my breath. That's assuming some of those 8 aren't the same coin that was cracked and resubmitted at some point. If it happens, cool, if not, I can happily live with the 12 coin set.

Cool set!
Really great set idea and execution! The type 1 double eagle has really grown on me with it and my example has become one of my favorites.
Wow. That's some set. Nice work!
Nice story and great coins

Of course there is also the $20 1861-S Paquet Reverse to add.
@Cladiator fantastic set, congratulations! Not sure if it was intentional or not, but today is also the 169th anniversary of when the SF Mint produced its very first coins…which were double eagles, naturally!
Beautiful set! I also love the story of circulated coins. You never know who held that coin at one time.
Congratulations on your set of circulated Type 1 Double Eagles! Any plans for a set of Type 2 S-mint Twenties? It would be 11 coins (or 12 coins if you include both the open and close 3 1873-S varieties).
I'm really enjoying looking at your coins! The date range has great appeal! These speak to me much more than lower grade BU "generic" dates. These take much effort to find with the minimal marks and good color. It's also the closest one can get to a "budget" set of $20's.
Really like that '54-S.
I got the bug to collect some 1st year mint silver dollars.
Got two. Didn't bother with the '21-D though.
Given the extreme rarity of the '54-S Half Eagle makes me wonder if they had so much gold that they minted more of the larger coins.
??
Total coincidence but that's pretty cool!
Very choice for the grade, better date Liberty Seated Dollars!
In the 1980's, I sat next to an older gentleman at a Stacks Auction. He bought a mid grade 1854-s $2.50 and an 1851 Seated Dollar. I don't remember the if dollar was restrike or the condition. i wish I had gotten his name.
I was bidding on some better date Liberty Seated Dime.
@Cladiator ... That is a beautiful set of Double Eagles.... I like that look as well on old gold, and the stories some of them could tell.... Cheers, RickO
I've thought seriously about continuing the set into later years but have decided against it. Instead I'm focusing my coin funds into completing a box of 20 collection.
Very nice set.
