Wow....really? Let's break into a truck full of money at the mint and steal.....dimes??? Yep...happened overnight. The master thieves broke into the overnight trailer parking lot at the Philly Mint and took almost $100,000 worth of new dimes. That's a heavy story....reportedly around 5000 lbs. Yikes! What is that going to do to that mintage value? Bags or rolls?? Ugh. Here's a shot from NBC:

Look for a bunch of dimes dumped uselessly along the road in 1-2 weeks. What are they going to do with them, deposit it?

  • That's a lot of pay phone calls.

Wow... Basically, a useless haul... Unless they take them to a Coinstar, that would be interesting to watch.... :D Could make more more money, faster, with a job. Cheers, RickO

It was a WalMart parking lot overnight. It's a common practice to park trucks there before a long drive, go home, get sleep, then start your drive the next day.

Since they were going from the mint, there's a chance there's some errors in those million plus dimes stolen. From my understanding, the way the mint works these days, processors who process coinage directly from the mint are obligated to return errors they find, and these dimes would be circumventing that whole step of the process in finding errors.

No armored truck big enough to carry 19 tons and
yet not valuable enough to warrant a security escort. A lot of truck's out there carrying cargo on excess of $750K.

the truck driver had picked up the coins from the Philadelphia Mint in Old City, drove to the Northeast where he lives, parked the trailer in the parking lot overnight and went home to rest before the next leg of his trip to Florida. Police said that was not an "unusual" practice.

A ballistic bag of dimes contains approximately 500,000 dimes (coins aren't counted, the bags are weighed)

Armed security drivers and security safeguards on the shipment.
    Camera?
GPS tracking device with live feed back to the main hub.
    Sensors on the truck doors.
Do the drivers not have communication and or have to check in periodically.
You know the simply safe stuff...
Who's bright idea was it to make a scheduled stop and wouldn't that be something to be cleared from the top?

I would get some of these trash cans, fill em with dimes, and put em in my barn. :)
