Questions about brockages, counter-brockages, PMD etc.

I have an overwhelming amount of coins that I have looked over and over and I'm still not sure what names or types they are. I've been on numerous sites and read a lot of material and also watched videos. I've also read a few glossaries. Most resources explain how it happened but I'm just trying to get guidelines or what you look for to determine what some coins are.

From your two posts and your comments within it appears to me that you might be missing the forrest for the trees.

Varieties and errors that are worth any money are typically scarce and generally don't need much magnification or imagination to see clearly. If you want to find varieties and errors then I would first tell you that your time might be better spent doing something else you enjoy. However, if you are determined, then the following might be useful-

Here is a better idea - rather than waiting for someone to tell you, look at some certified brockage and counterbrockage errors yourself and describe how they are different from regular coins. You'll learn more that way.

You will not find brockage and counterbrockage errors in your change; they are too rare. To have a shot at finding any major mint errors, you would need to be searching hundreds of thousands of coins. Whatever you've found so far is bound to be PMD.

    Exactly, well said.

  • I'm no dummy. Obviously your interpretations need work. I never once mentioned searching trying to find that $1 million dollar coin and all I can see are dollar signs. I know there's levels to this.i can't go searching for anything until I know what to look for! Certain errors have a general rule of thumb but every brockage never looks the same or some idiot did a vice job intentionally to deceive, if I can't determine treasure in my face, that means I skipped a step and need to go back. I just need more confidence in myself and followed a suggestion to join a forum so I can communicate with people who are willing to share experiences and knowledge. Everybody started somewhere, even you!

You appear combative in both your threads while you have also had multiple people attempt to reach out to help. If you're genuinely interested in numismatics, and not merely an internet troll, then you simply don't realize just how much you don't know.

Folks are attempting to help you. If you can't communicate exactly what you want or hope for then those on these boards might have to guess. As it is going, it seems like your time on these boards might be quite short.

At the risk of getting yelled at, 99.9% of your coins are just coins. The other 0.1% are probably machine doubling.

If you want to learn about errors, go to Heritage and look at the catalog from one of their error auctions.

Most coins aren't errors or varieties of note. They are just coins.

True error coins are rare, which is why they are valuable. The Cherry Pickers Guide (both volumes) is a worthwhile investment, to study and also as a reference. Good luck, Cheers, RickO

  • Oh ok, I'll label them pmd. I didn't know all errors found in change is pmd. Learning something new everyday. So where are mint errors found? (Don't wanna sound combative)

Try answering your own question. You can start by re-reading the responses here. Then use the Forum search function to look up other threads on mint errors. You'll learn more that way.

Search the forum for error threads like @IkesT said. You should find some interesting errors and some valuable information.

For reference, my kids and i searched about 100,000 pennies over the last few months. All from $25 bank boxes. Found a handful worth maybe $2-3 bux each.

There are some on here that search waaaay more than that and still dont find anything of substantial value.

If you like searching and learning, then have fun with it. If you are looking to cash out and retire from error coins found in the wild, it wont happen.

Thank you, I really appreciate that. I bet your kids will remember that experience forever. I remember my papa (my grand dad) would let me play with the Ikes when I was little. I was amazed at how big they were and thought we were rich lol. But yeah I'm just really enjoying looking through them and familiarizing myself for now. I'm amazed at how many I'm finding in amazing mint condition (I'm sure it's bc they weren't circulated much, if at all, before they were put in there). There's some rolls of brand new buffalo nickels that I know I should save but the temptation to open just 1 is making me antsy.

You might do well to take an image or two of the rolls of Buffalo nickels, without opening them, and post them on the boards. There are folks here who know a bit about what vintage rolls should or should not look like and they might be able to give you some insight into how old the roll could be. It's not an exact science, but those who have seen lots of things can identify details.

Two days ago I got about 1200 from my bank for half dollar and dollar. I opened some, so far I found nothing.
