Spring Gettysburg Coin Show Update

The Spring Gettysburg Coin show was Thursday-Saturday, April 6-8, 2023. The attendance approached pre-covid levels with 926, which included early birds. There were no security issues that I was made aware of. Dirk, Keith and Steve have done an excellent job with security over the years.

Bullion (of course) was hot, collector coins were selling and so were higher grade Morgan dollars and certified gold. Proof and mints sets seemed to be dead at this show, but several collectors brought in both types of sets to sell. I bought a 10 oz silver bar, several rolls of common date Peace dollars, a Civil War token, several BU war nickels, a beautiful Uncirculated 3c nickel with a heavy die clash, a very under-graded 1881 S PCGS MS65 Morgan in an old rattler holder, an 1878 S Morgan with a beautiful rose tone, and some partial sets of Lincoln and Indian cents.

Most dealers did very well. We had 4 new to this show dealers, of which only one did well. I always tell new to the show dealers that the public needs to get used to them and it usually takes 3 shows. From what I have learned over 40+ years of promoting coin shows is; at the first show the public notices the new dealer, but is apprehensive about buying from them because they are unfamiliar. At the second show, the public sees a semi-familiar face and will talk with the dealer, and at the third show, the public sees an established dealer at the show, trusts the dealer, and buys from them.

Somebody asked me to post about the food at the show. The hotel had a food stand outside the bourse floor. They had parmesan cheese chicken sandwiches, which I thought, were delicious. Many dealers mistook the smell for pizza. They had salads, nachos with cheese and deli sandwiches. The prices were not bad either. If you wanted a pizza, you had to walk 50 yards to the deli and buy it there.

I want to personally invite you to the Fall Gettysburg Coin Show on Labor Day Weekend (August 31-September 2, 2023). You can call the Eisenhower hotel and ask for the coin show room rate.

@MICHAELDIXON... Thank you for an interesting report. This show seems to be growing, and always has great attendance (based on reports here). Good security is always a positive factor for coin shows. The bullion market portion does not surprise me, and I think it is about to get even more attention. Cheers, RickO
