Why are IKEs in Rattler Slabs so Expensive?

RampageRampage Posts: 9,486 ✭✭✭✭✭

I see a handful on eBay with decent bidding activity and I thought it was interesting. Were they not really submitted in high quantities back in the day?

There are also a lot of slab collectors, and others who think the coins in rattlers will upgrade. Cheers, RickO

Of these, I can locate under $100. I try to purchase- but generally, they go for much more.
I was fortunate to last a second bid on this one and won:

I am attempting to locate a graded CLAD Ike in a rattler, and that exercise has proven improbable so far.

Agree with this. I'm building GEM sets for the Morgans in different slabs, and it's getting harder.

Supply and demand. Rattlers can be open, coin switched out and closed back up, from what I have heard.

Not as far as I know. They are sonically sealed, which means the two pieces of the case are welded together.

Ike were worth much less 35 years ago so probably not many got sent for grading.

    Yes

When PCGS became aware of the counterfeit rattlers, they started by adding a band (3rd piece). Then shortly switched to a shell that had the "band" as an integral part of the shell.

Weirdly, I haven't thought of the counterfeit original rattlers in a long time. There is a spacing difference on the reverse label that's the tell.

The new slabs looked so much better and I think it was only $2 ea to reholder them at the time.
It also drove me CRAZY with the coins all turned of center in the rattler slabs,,,,,,,,,

Do you still have all those, or have you parted with them over the years?

I never liked rattler slabs - stacking issues, plus coin rotated in holder. As far as upgrading I would think about all of them been picked over by now. The last time sent some in to upgrade (years ago) about 50pct upgraded but the grading cost & shipping set me back to break even if not in the red. I recently bought a PCGS MS67 silver Ike for $30 off the bay (newest holder) that’s less than grading cost (after fees, shipping, insurance, etc.).
