While CRH half dollars today I fount this1968D Kennedy I believe is struck on Quarter Stock (Correction) "When I posted this I didn't take into consideration that in 1968 Quarters were no longer Silver". My Bad! This half dollar weighs in at 9.65 grams, Thickness is 1.66mm, diameter 30.38mm. I have found one similar to this a few years ago, but in clad. it is a 1977 that weighed 8.8 grams. Please check out the photos and tell me your thoughts.

I see nothing to support your suggestion that it's on quarter stock. Looks like a regular silver clad 1968-D with some circulation wear.
Given that it is underweight and appears thinner than usual, it is likely struck on rolled thin stock. It might even be struck on stock rolled to quarter thickness, but it appears to be 40% silver, which means that it cannot be struck on actual quarter stock (quarter stock is copper-nickel clad).

It doesn't resemble this one.

That's struck on a quarter planchet but he was hoping his was struck on quarter stock or strip, from which a half dollar planchet was punched out.
Attached is a chart that was calculated in the late 70's or early 80's for coins struck on wrong stock planchets.
Note: The weights are in grains.
As pointed out above, quarter dollar stock was copper-nickel clad.
Looks like the planchet may be slightly tapered.

Here are a couple of mine. The last one is possibly on 25c stock.
Okay I didn't take into consideration that in 1968 Quarters are not silver. My bad. So my statement is incorrect that is could be quarter stock unless there were still silver quarter stock still around the mint during the minting of this coin. most likely not! I don't believe this is caused by coin wear. There is too much detail on this coin to say its weight is due to wear. Now I haven't myself heard of Half Dollar stock being rolled thinner than other stock. That could be the case.. I am only guessing and I was wrong for sure because I didn't take the date of this coin into consideration when thinking it could be quarter stock. I'm still learning here, trying to under stand. Quarter stock and Quarter planchet are two different beasts.
I think you’re right. That could explain the light weight.
@arby96 ... It does look like the coin in question is tapered. Take some measurements and let us know. Cheers, RickO
I measured the coin North, South, East, and West. North1.73mm, South, 1.64mm, East,1.74mm, and West, 1.70mm. This coin also has a higher pitch sound, which is expected with a coin this thin. I also measured a AU 68 and it measured approximately 2.0mm at all points +or- .01.
