New wallet/pocket piece - 1890-CC Morgan

I usually find a really nice coin or two in my LCS Morgan pick tray, although I’m gonna have to say this is a first.

Polished, a bit scratched up, and kind of ugly, but it is a CC Morgan. Will be keeping this one in my wallet until it looks a bit more natural.

Nice find. Great looking pocket piece too. Here’s one I’ve carried for over 43 years and my father carried for 35 years before me

    Do you remember the date?

Type collector, mainly into Seated. -formerly Ownerofawheatiehorde. Good BST transactions with: mirabela, OKCC, MICHAELDIXON, Gerard

Dad's been gone for almost 44 years, so no clue as to the year on that Morgan

@dsessom ... No, no pocket piece. I know many collectors do carry them, but I never wanted to do that with my coins. Just a personal preference... Cheers, RickO

Just started carrying 2 Morgan pocket pieces, both key dates, based on posts I've read here. Hoping to improve their look somewhat. The CC has a bad dentil hit on the cheek and appears to have been over-dipped with no luster. The 86S was polished or whizzed. Bot both early in my collecting days from EBAY based on bad photos and some AT. Do they have any chance before I die, lol.

Here is my pocket piece that I have had for about 10 years or so. It's always a great conversation starter.

Interesting to see two 78-CC Morgans as pocket pieces. I like the 78-CC Morgan a lot as it saw quite a bit of contemporary circulation and although there are plenty of wonderful MS coins there are also plenty of wonderful circulated pieces.

The Coinfacts page for the 78-CC includes some local Nevada commentary about the new dollars, which apparently weren't very well liked:

The Carson City Morning Appeal April 17, 1878, printed this article: "Dies at Last: Yesterday morning the new dies for the U.S.

Mint arrived from Philadelphia. There were ten obverse, ten reverse, and six collars. The dies were hardened yesterday and the big Ajax press will start up today. There are 632,325 blanks ready for the press and when they get to work will turn out the dollars at the rate of 30,000 per day. We have had our little say about the dollars coined in Philadelphia, and how the Coiner here is driven to follow in his footsteps, or rather the press whacks, of the concern on the Delaware.

"Great disgust was expressed at the general appearance of the dies [design was the word probably intended]. All that has been said as to the wretched workmanship of the Philadelphia dollar, will be equally true of the Carson dollar, arid it can't be helped. The die represents the same wide, flat, pelican-bat of the wilderness, and will show up all the defects of the coin. The C.C. in the die is very indistinct, and looks as if it would turn out two periods. We wish it may, and that the inartistic appearance of the coin will lead the government to employ a new designer and give us a new die, dollar and deal. The United States ought to be ashamed to issue such a piece of workmanship, and at least should allow a small discount on the face of the thing."

Wow! The author of the article sure didn't hold back! Haha. Now, 155 years later, the Morgan dollar is probably one of the most widely recognized US coins ever made.

'Pelican-bat of the wilderness', ha. Never heard that one before. Maybe a little envious with Philly governing the process.
