I am considering buying this Ike Dollar as it is under $50 but I have no experience buying this particular series. Wanted to get opinions from Ike specialists if this is a good coin.
Thanks to all.

I have since dropped out of the bidding on this coin on everyones advice and purchased a new coin that I think looks better, (see below). What do you think either positive or negative on the new purchase.

NEW COIN What do you guys think?

It looks nice to me. I bought a MS68 of the same date for my type set for $125 a few months ago. The one you are looking at is almost as nice looking for a much cheaper price

Even in high grades these come with spotting, which I hate. I can’t tell much from the photos, but I can see some spots. This isn’t a particularly hard coin to find, so I’d wait for a really nice one. And much as I’ll rag on Ikes, high grade silver ones can look awesome, and I love the matte finish. I have one in 68 and really enjoy it.

Do you see any chance for an upgrade as it’s in an older holder?

It's a common coin in a common grade that is nearly always available for purchase. As for an upgrade...who the heck knows? The difference between an MS67 and MS68 in this series can be whisper thin and a matter of chance.

    Nice coin

@TomB nailed it. The coin is super common. The grade is super common. If you want a 68, then I suggest buying one already labeled as such. If you are aiming to buy this coin for under $50, then regrade it for whatever that cost is, you may get it back in the same grade it already is. Will you still enjoy the coin? Or will you be disappointed you wasted good money on something that really does not matter?

With all due respect, wouldn't it be better to buy coins that you think are good instead of ones that other people tell you are good?

There's nothing wrong with getting a second opinion, especially in an unfamiliar series. As far as the coin goes, as someone completely unfamiliar with Ikes I think it looks nice. Not sure about the price, $30-$40 seems about right as far as I can see.

The larger question though is are you buying the coin because you like the series and want a reasonably priced example, or because you might score an upgrade? If the former, that's great and there are plenty of nice coins available for you to choose from. If the latter then you'll always end up disappointed.

Well I understand your point but I thought it was attractive and I do like the look and the older holder. Still as I am not that familiar with the qualities that pertain in that series I thought some experienced Ike collectors might point out something I might be missing.

Nice coin buy you can probably do better than$50.

Now that I'm seeing larger photos on my computer versus my phone, it also looks like there's a fingerprint in the lower right obverse field. The spotting I previously mentioned aside, there's absolutely no reason to buy a common coin like this with such a major detraction.

Disparaging someone for trying to learn is particularly low, and on a forum designed for people to exchange knowledge, no less.

I wasn't disparaging anyone. One might say assuming such is particularly low, but I won't.

I’m no expert on Ike’s just yet but learning quickly.
I picked up this display set for 69.95 and mainly for the 71 that I will try and clean up.

@Walkerlover - Unless you are buying this coin just for the older holder, you can get this coin, in this grade for $30 all day long on Ebay. PCGS Price Guide is a little too enthusiastic on the Ike series. If Price Guide says $40, then subtract about 25%, unless it's a stellar coin. One coin in the series where this does not hold true is the 1972P Type 2. Price Guide is about right for those.

And a major distraction. An obvious print, particularly on a modern coin, is a major disqualifier for my collection.

Thanks for all your feedback. I passed on the coin and bought a nicer looking one which I hope to post soon when it arrives.

Looks very clean. I've always liked Ikes and Franklins, there is something strangely appealing about the flat designs and huge open fields.
