I got this from my gramps - I’m sure it was not intentionally toned (or at least, he didn’t do it) so what do y’all think?
Is the toning natural or is it fake as hell?

I'm sure it looks different in hand. Hard for me to tell from the photos. Nice Peace Dollar.

Appears to be a combination of some toning and dirty. A soak in acetone might be warranted. Good luck. Peace Roy

Seems natural but it doesn’t really matter since it’s so unattractive.
Looks like ugly tarnish and maybe some accumulated schmutz. Cheers, RickO
Maybe stored in an old leather pouch for decades.
Dipping it will be like putting lipstick on a pig.
Lol - obviously my photography skills didn’t do her much justice! Those that know me know I am not a fan of toners but this one is really unusual. Just wondered if anyone could tell if it was artificial or not.
Thanks all
I think it's completely legit though not attractive. I've encountered lots of old silver coinage of the 'sock drawer hoard' type cleaning out after elderly relatives and helping friends do the same, and that's a look I've seen lots of times on coins that sat around in old purses, shoeboxes, jewelry drawers, etc.
If the gold in the recessed areas is accurate in the pictures, it might have been dipped long ago in Tarnex type dip that had been previously used to dip gold coins. I remember reading that this was a crude way to put a thin plating of gold on the coin. Not sure with this coin though, but it was the first thing I thought of when I saw the picture. Like it was dipped long ago and got a thin layer of gold and then the whole coin turned dark from environmental exposure after being handled a bit but the recessed areas still look golden

I think it's natural. Is your grandfather an active collector.... or was this an item he had for a long time? Likely not stored very well which caused the toning.
