Large cent variety identification; May I please impose?

Hello, everyone.

I feel like such a mooch but I just don't have the needed skills to learn what I want to learn I guess. Anyway, I pulled this out of a box of odds n' ends and I have spent the last 2 hours trying to figure out what Sheldon variety this coin is. I found the online sites that show the varieties but I just can't figure this one out. I know it is reverse of 1797 and it is "with stems", but after that, I'm in Lala land. Any kind assistance would be appreciated. This is ultimately eBay bound but I want to be able to give a complete description (and also to see if it is some super-rare variety). Thanks SO much!!

    What website do you use?

I haven’t found a good one for Sheldon and Newcomb, as I have been to embarrassed to ask. :D

    Hi, Ownerofawheatiehorde.

Give these a shot. I find the task difficult to identify Varieties, especially with the earlier varieties and "questionable language" usually are muttered in abundance when I give it a shot. Good luck. There are some great "pros" out there but I don't expect to have that skill until well into my next life (and I'll probably come back as an Iguana or something). 🤣
    Good luck!!!

    Hi, Jim.

    Thanks for the assistance!!!

Darn. I guess I typed in the wrong date for my Large Cent in my post. I should have typed 1797. Now, where exactly did I put that brain a couple of weeks ago when I used it for something? 🙄Piano1

Are you sure it has stems? At a glance from up here in Earth's orbit, it looks kind of like an S-132. I'd need better pics to narrow it down without spending an inordinate amount of time with it.

Jim is thinking about Half Cents at the moment...it's not a C-1, lol.

Hello, opportunity, and thanks very much for your much-appreciated assistance with my 1797 cent. I struggled with the same question; stems or no stems, but though obscured, they are faintly present. I don't think I can get a better picture with my limited skills with a camera, but again, the stems are there. Perhaps this coin is just too heavily circulated to do a final evaluation of the variety, but your efforts are appreciated!!!

I would guess you're using your phone. My suggestion would be to get under good overhead light and to zoom in about 4x to see if you can get all or most of the coin into the frame without a shadow.

Sorry, I was riding and hurried without paying attention, my bad.

@Piano1... Will that be going on ebay or the BST?? Cheers, RickO

    Good morning, everyone.

jesbroken...no problem with the mixup. I am the master of mixups (as can be witnessed by some of my past posts) so no worries. Your efforts are appreciated nonetheless.

ricko, I'm admitting my ignorance here but can I ask, what is BST?

Ultimately, I would like to sell the 1797 cent and eBay is the only way I know how to reach a large audience. I have had some success on eBay since I started listing last month. I just want to know if I have some super rare variety here with my AG 1797 cent that would allow me to buy that villa on the South Coast of France that I've been watching. 🤣 Just kidding of course.

Finally, opportunity, I am a holdout on cell phones. I just don't want all the fuss and bother of having to learn all that technical stuff, so no cell phone for Piano1. My wife has a new one that buzzes, bleeps, rings, plays Brahm's Lullaby, talks to her and all that stuff and it drives me nutso. (Confession, I do have one that came over with my Great, Great Uncle Christopher on the Mayflower but it lives in the car and is for emergencies only (unless I need to call my wife to clarify something on the grocery list she gave me). Personally, I wish Uncle Chris would have thrown the damn thing overboard!

Gee, Piano1, how do you REALLY feel about cell phones??!! 😬

Have a great day, everyone and thanks!

Go to top of page and click on home, then scroll down to the buy, sell or trade link. That is the forums own "ebay". Have had good luck here.

I’m not much help attributing this one, sorry. I was able to eliminate a number of them, but too many remain, including a number of NC-Sheldon varieties, that are similar. I’m a little skeptical of the S134 attribution, but @opportunity has handled a LOT more early copper than I have, so I wouldn’t bet against him.

I actually took a closer look and I think it's probably an S-135. It appears that the stems are just really hard to see in the pics, as OP suggested.
