I appreciate the perspectives of different worlds - even when they collide.
For the purposes of this thread, the question if less about the basis of the pricing of the coins (whether you base pricing on CDN or HA Completed auctions, the pricing would be competitive)... but more that I have been very dedicated, and have an opportunity to acquire nice coins that are not 100% aligned with my current set goals. However, I am newer and really have not had the span in the hobby to collect other series (which does not mean that I do not like the coins).
The feedback here is split. Some say to stay focused. Others say to expand horizons, and let my heart follow its own path. Honestly, I think I will do both. I will probably buy type coins and rarities that speak to me (with a concentration on what my next moves might be after half cents). However, I will probably give myself at least a 1:1 ratio to continue my half cents without losing steam.
The great news is, I don't have much of a collection... I will not have much worry about duplicating coins, so I really can try to be less rigid (not easy for me) and be more heart-driven as buy coins and learn from them.
Thanks for the perspectives... and feel free to keep sharing.
I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.
I always try to convince newer collectors to work on a US type set, even if it's in low grade, to familiarize them with the span of US coins. Also, it provides for some variety and could spark interest in other series as well. I myself am slowly working on another US type set. I have done one before, but most coins were quite low grade, and in a variety of TGP holders. This time, it will be all PCGS and a bit higher grade.

I don’t give a hoot about what you think about it or who you are. For that matter your an auctioneer with your own method of operation. 2. CPG is simply a popular widely used, consistent MV reference point based on CDN bid. I highly recommend it. 3. How I operate is none of your fricking business. Yes different players operate differently just like different college fb coaches have different off /def playbooks.
Wow did I miss something?
He doesn't seem to like me very much and I don't like him. More importantly, I believe that we have very different views regarding how to view and treat both buyers and sellers, as well as about what constitutes a fair price to pay for PQ coins.
I did have to laugh at his being upset that you mentioned his business model after he posted his weekend purchases and sales in response to a completely different question about collection focus.
Just a new thought - if he has a lot that you want but can’t afford today, I’ll bet he’ll hold them for you while you save up the funds. This could really jump start your collection in other areas if it applies.
It doesn’t sound like he’s in a crunch and you two have a good relationship. My main point is don’t let a total amount keep you from letting him know you want something.
Totally agree that I need to make my own choices, but I was just curious what other collectors would do if they found themselves in a similar position. I am not trying to be an "askhole" and ask for advice that I won't take, but more get opinions from the seasoned collector community. The advice I got in the thread is solid with lots of ideas and approaches.
I am sure I will be adopting some of those ideas. My key takeaway is, "Do what makes you happy, and maintain a balance between a narrowly focused strategy and wider numismatic exploration in new areas that may become more accessible because of this opportunity."
Thanks for everyone that weighed-in. I am excited to see the rest of the collection, learn a lot, and potentially pickup some great coins along the way.
Thanks again!

Cougar deals in the hard nitty gritty of the bourse.
Feldini deals in another market and approach.
Two different worlds.
And that's when the fight started.
I think there are more differences than that!

This is really a question that you can only answer yourself. Its a choice only you can make and what others think is besides the point.
