Strange date 1887 morgan, what is it?

Any ideas what is going on with the date on this Morgan dollar?
It looks like the metal under the 1887 is recessed and the second 8 looks funky.
I was checking vam world and I got a headache so I decided to post pictures to see what others think?

    Not that uncommon. I think its a worn/polished die and since its an incuse design, appears to have a basining impact. Could be wrong.

    It looks like die erosion.... Not uncommon as dies wear and are polished for extended use. Cheers, RickO
