    A nice AU was my thinking. Go with 53 to pick a number.

    AU53. Too much detail on the coin for a 50 (?).

    45, maybe 50. Looks like it was wiped or lightly cleaned and starting to retone...

    I'm in the AU53 crowd; agree it is dipped and somewhat retoned, but should have straight graded.

    Happy for you that AU was assigned but LIBERTY and band should be more distinct for AU imo.

    Still learning. How do recognize dipped coins? What are the clues? And by dipped do you mean acetone or something more harsh?

  • HigashiyamaHigashiyama Posts: 2,192 ✭✭✭✭✭

    @Riley1955:

    For this Barber dime, a few signs:

    — Overall, it is bright/pale
    — Luster seems muted, possibly due to multiple dips
    — Where it has retoned, it is brownish in hue

    Dipped in a non abrasive tarnish remover rather than acetone. Acetone gets rid of PVC or gunk, but generally won’t remove toning

    There are certain series that I am decent at grading. Barbers is one of them, V nickels, Shield nickels, Ike dollars, Bust quarters and halves.

    Others - not so much. Buffalo nickels are terribly hard for me, and pretty much any gold coins throw me as well.
