Nice looking Saint! Bidder 10 put his high bid in yesterday while bidder 11 eclipsed it today. Bidder 10 may have bid his top dollar limit and may not be back - should be interesting.

Nice coin but I'd rather have a nice MS64 and the several thousand dollars that would be saved by not buying this one. Of course, the two bidders who are fighting for this coin are probably very rich which is something that I'm not.

It's crazy money, not just on this coin, I've noticed in auction PCGS CAC saints across the series are going for "to the moon" prices. Even generic 24 and 27 saints with huge populations are going for insane dough! I guess it's good if you already own a few and fantastic if you have even more!

The non-CAC 23D 66+ is $4000 less for now. CAC premiums still holding up fine.

Judging from the offers of $20 golds I have gotten over the past couple years and still coming, European banks must have had a jillion metric tonnes of them.

Stunning coin. I've always found 23-D to be plentiful in gem mint, as the few nice Saint collections I've bought contained exceptional examples of the date. However, the quality of this coin exceeds all of the 23-D's I've handled. I'm sure the winner of this auction will be pleased with their new acquisition.

Earlier Bidder 11 was top bid at $8,700, now bidder 10 is showing $8.700 and bidder 11 jumped back on top at $8,950. Strange, was this a correction of the earlier reporting or?

This is a clear example of how bidding early on GC can sometimes be costly. As long as you’re available to place your max hammer within the last 15 seconds or so of the end, there’s absolutely no advantage of placing that max hammer any earlier.

1. If your max hammer is less than what another bidder has planned for his max hammer, then it makes no difference if you place your max hammer bid early or late - you’re going to lose regardless.
2. But if your max hammer bid is potentially strong enough to win, and you place it early, even just 2 minutes or so before the end, you’re giving others time to place multiple bids. That is, a competitor places a bid after seeing you as the high bidder (but not knowing your max hammer bid). If his bid is not higher than your max, he’ll see that your high bid has now immediately popped up to exceed the max bid he just placed. So now, maybe with 1-1/2 minutes to go, he decides if he should bid again, possibly just one increment above your current high bid. He proceeds, and lo and behold, you popped up again to retain the current high bid. This can potentially go on several more times before the clock runs out. So either he had many opportunities to surpass you, or even if you end up as the high bidder, you ended up paying more money than you had to.
3. By placing a strong max hammer with only around 15 seconds left (I do it at around 12 or 13 seconds), either you’ll be short (where timing therefore didn’t matter), or you’ll have the high bid, and if others were watching and now see your high bid, they won’t have the time to place another bid after seeing yours to either beat you, or cause you to pay more than you had to.
4. As a bidder, GC clearly has the best design. eBay auctions work the same way. As far as “structure” goes, as a seller, the other auction houses, like Heritage, Legend, DLRC, Stacks, etc. have the best setup to maximize the final high hammer price, as the bidding never ends via a clock as long as someone else is bidding.
