I’ve waited quite some time to find an original example of one of these, and this proves that patience will eventually pay off!
I’m very pleased with this example, especially at my price of $2,000 >:)

Better pictures, much more accurate in-hand look here:

@asheland... Very nice old gold.... I often wish the history of these coins could be reviewed like a historical video. I imagine what they may have purchased and the people that carried them. Cheers, RickO

I'm not crazy about it. Too many small marks for my taste, especially on a date that is available in quantity in high grade as a result of sea salvage from the S.S. Central America.

Awesome NEWP! I like the circulated historical look.

What a beautiful and interesting addition.
    Congratulations👍👌

    Seriously?
For 2k, PCGS holstered, Type I, and in decent condition it is (almost) a steal.

    Well done!

Good job. How can you go wrong with a reasonably attractive DE from 1857 that’s in a PCGS 50 holder with only a small premium?

  • ashelandasheland Posts: 23,383 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Thanks everybody!
Indeed it has bag marks, but for the grade I’m more than pleased with it.

Very nice type coin. What's market on this coin and how did you get it at that price? Thanks for sharing.

Wow, very cheap for old gold!

@logger7 It's a perk while working at a coin shop. It came in and I snatched it up right away.
The boss knew I've been looking for a nice, original T1 $20. B)

I thought that GS bid was higher, but looks like to be around $2000 but who can get them for that?

    To each their own.
I do not see the appeal of the overly processed look many of the sea salvaged coins come with.

That’s correct, the printed gray sheet was something like 2080? I checked my phone because I have the app, and it was like right at 2000, but like you were just saying, you can’t touch them for that at least not an original one like this.

I’m very happy with the purchase plus, it’s a type I’ve needed for a while and I’m very happy with the way it looks.

Interesting how the circulated 1857-S $20 is more scarce than the SSCA shipwreck group! Plus you got it for barely above bullion pricing!

These S mint $20 Libs that truly circulated on the West Coast normally come with significant bag marks but this coin looks very decent for the grade. If you can get JA to sticker it then you hit a homerun. Even without the CAC sticker, you hit a nice single or double.

Reminds me of the depression era 1931-S cent which is harder to find in very worn circulated condition than in mint state.

Indeed it definitely needs to go to CAC at some point. 👍

Shucks, not just the S ones. I have a ‘89 Philly CAC in 62 that has more than it’s fair share of marks! They really treated those babies rough, back in the day!😉

Very nice to have a non shipwreck example. It must have sucked for people to own Orig MS coins before the the Central America hoard. I have an MS66+, super coin for the type but unheard of 30 years ago.

I really like the color and eye appeal of this coin for an AU-50 $20! Also love that it is an early date from San Francisco.

    i happen to own both a gorgeous PCGS/CAC MS-65 1857-S $20 SSCA and a circulated PCGS/CAC 1857-S non SSCA $20.

I like these circulated $20’s more including yours.

Of course, you'll pay up for an 1857-S in high-AU or low-MS grade. I believe the SSCA still command a premium to non-SSCA but it has narrowed in recent years.

    What's an AU-58 (SSCA or non-SSCA) go for ?

Hoard stories are FASCINATING. The SSCA 1850's are super-unique of course.
