BUYING 1 OUNCE GOLD BARS AT APMEX OR OTHER MAJOR DEALERS ON EBAY.

Have any of you bought one ounce bars in assay at apmex or Liberty.? Do you know if these purchases are safe or could be somehow fake gold? I would like to buy a few but am a bit nervous. Any advice is appreciated.

They're both reputable companies and I've had good experiences with Liberty via ebay, including a couple of 10 gram gold bars.

I've never purchased bars from Ampex but have never had any issues with anything I've purchased from them. I have purchased bars from SD Bullion and again no issues. Unfortunately there are counterfeit bars out there. The bars and packaging have been counterfeit. There are sometimes indicators of a counterfeit in the design, fonts used and sealing of the assay card. A metalytics verifier would be helpful to check bars in the packaging.

Apmex is trustworthy and easy to deal with. I've done this and that with them over the past 20 years from trivial to very large and never had any problem. Edited to add, do check their website, I'd be surprised if you couldn't get the same thing for a little less by going to them directly since ebay has to get a cut somehow.

Don't forget to take the payment method into account (i.e., 'check/wire' vs. 'CC/PayPal').

For example, consider a 1.0 oz. Credit Suisse Gold Bar (.9999 Fine) In Assay Card.

    At eBay:

    At APMEX:

Cheaper at APMEX with 'check/wire'; cheaper at eBay with 'CC/PayPal'.

These are silver and never a problem. If It’s Craigs list or one of the others , or shipping from China. Perhaps use prices for comparison. If it seems to good and so forth.

Why are you choosing to buy a 1 oz gold bar when there are 1 oz gold coins available? When it comes time to sell, gold coins are more liquid. The small gold bars in the blister packs have been heavily counterfeited which is why I won't buy them.
I suggest also asking this question in the Precious Metals Forum here.

monument metals has some really good prices on bullion and coins and when i buy online its from them,
if your buying gold off Ebay get a metal verifier.
my coin guy i go to will run everything you buy across the sigma just as a last check before you take it home.
bullion has the lower premiums but in the end buy both coins and bullion.

I have purchased items from Apmex occasionally... never bars though, and no problems. For gold, I stick to coins... much easier to sell when liquidating. Cheers, RickO

Just out of curiosity, how come the gold coins, ( i assume certified by a major service) is more liquid? I would assume that the assay one ounce is more liquid since it is sealed and in theory there should be more demand. Are people afraid of buying them, or is it jus the counterfitting threat?

Apmex is a big company with pretty big markups. If they sold one fake, the competition would have a field day exposing it. No need to sell fakes and the risk to their reputation would be too high. They are ok for bullion, but for collector coins I would look elsewhere.

I've frequently purchased gold coins from APMEX and Liberty with no issues.

I've had great transactions with people like: drwstr123, CCC2010, AlanLastufka, Type2, Justlooking, zas107, StrikeOutXXX, 10point, 66Tbird, and many more!
