Just bought my first Middle Date Large Cent!

After watching the HA auction Monday night I had an itch to buy a Middle Date. After searching a bit I found this nice 1817 N-8. The PCGS plastic alone is $50...I got her for $65. To boot I think she is a nice G6 and was a good value. Let me know what you think.

Nice pickup

I agree, nice pickup.

Very nice!! Type set or mid date, date set??
@Tibor I think I am going to do a Middle Date set...all G6. That's a challenge but doable. My Late Date set is mostly MS but the upgrades I need require patience and $$$. A nice well matched, wholesome, G6 set will look nice and keep me busy.
I see that one is die state 2, with just a start of the “mouse” on the top of the head.
Here’s the late die state, with the full peeping mouse:
Very nice, I prefer Braided Hair but Matron is a close 2nd. Any Lg cent is a good one!
Type collector, mainly into Seated. -formerly Ownerofawheatiehorde. Good BST transactions with: mirabela, OKCC, MICHAELDIXON, Gerard
Nice pick up! These are a bit more difficult to find nice in lower grades. Most offerings are corroded or have some other issues.
Be careful though... these can get addictive!
Successful BST transactions with: SilverEagles92; Ahrensdad; Smitty; GregHansen; Lablade; Mercury10c; copperflopper; whatsup; KISHU1; scrapman1077, crispy, canadanz, smallchange, robkool, Mission16, ranshdow, ibzman350, Fallguy, Collectorcoins, SurfinxHI, jwitten, Walkerguy21D, dsessom.
I like your thinking.
Keeping it all within the same grade will make for a wonderful presentation.

Looks like great surfaces! Fair price too.

@Walkerguy21D... OK... Now 'peeping mouse' is a new term for me.... Does that refer to the top knot on her head?? Cheers, RickO
Yes indeed, an unusual die break....not sure who 'coined' the term, but apparently it's been in use by the EAC guys for a very long time.
And seeing my image on the PC makes me realize how out of focus that photo was - sorry all!
@Walkerguy21D.... Thanks, added a new term to my numismatic lexicon today... Cheers, RickO
Well, now I learned something, in that there are different nicknames depending on the advancement of the die break. The op’s would be the “dolphin”.
This is from an August 1912 article, where the author is referencing earlier auction descriptions. So the name(s) apparently are even older than I thought.
@Walkerguy21D You are truly a font of Middle Date knowledge! When I describe my cent I will term it the "Dolphin Die Break" as attributed by Walkerguy21D and insist when it ultimately goes to auction it is described as such! What a cool cent to be number 1 in my G6 set. I actually have my sights set on another that matches the look of this 1817 but will wait for this coin to arrive in hand. I am hooked now on Middle Dates. When I read the article you posted by McGirk he notes there are 4 obverse dies distinguished by the spacing if the numerals in the date...Dolphin is 1 81 7, Yours I believe is 1 817 which would make your posted cent the "Snail" . To my eye your cent matches Figure 2 of McGirk. Thanks for the education my friend!

Good eye!
I think, that since the article was written decades before Newcomb published his book on middle date varieties, they had perhaps not yet distinguished the N7 from the N8 and N9, other than noting the spacing of the date. All have the same distinct die break to varying degrees. He probably chose to intersperse them, because it’s what he had on hand?
Mine may very well be the N7 and not the N8, so hard to tell on these lower grade coins. But since the N7 is an R3+, I’ll take.
Now, what I want to know, is how did three distinct obverses all wind up with this very peculiar defect? I’m guessing a real expert knows!
@ricko @Walkerguy21D since we were talking about interesting names for die breaks...here's a new one for me ..check out this 1831 "Harpoon Whale" N-12 variety....pretty wild if you ask me. I would buy it if it was G6 but alas it is VG10.,,,and $1000.
@RLSnapper...
Good one, had not seen that before. Thanks for showing us. Cheers, RickO
Argh!! Don’t remind me of this coin!
I had a chance to cherry one when I was a neophyte copper variety guy for about $50. It was slightly more worn and the die state a little less advanced. I looked it up when I got home, said yeah I should’ve snagged it, but I’ll see the dealer next month and I’m sure he’ll still have it - hah!
