These are coins usually with multiple minute black spots. Carbon Spots? Acquired from minting process or later from environment?

Thanks mine so small lol but like yours too. On first glance the 83-O $ looks like higher grade than 63 in my view. Each coin has its pluses and minuses.

I guess these are called carbon spots?

OK, I’ve shown this coin before. I call it my “Ash Wednesday” Half Cent, lol.

I bought it three years ago at auction as a MS64RD with a CAC. Not only did CAC like it, I liked it too, due to the rich color, despite the VERY obvious carbon spot. Once I had it in hand, I liked it even more, so I sent it back to PCGS for Reconsideration. Sure enough, despite PCGS initially grading it 64RD, they now agreed with me that it actually is real nice, so they added on a plus. So now it’s a 64+RD, with a CAC.

Really want to laugh? Take a peek at the PCGS Price Guide value difference for this date between 64RD and 64+RD! Yes, I know - that’s only a guide, and when the day comes when I (or my heirs) sell this coin in auction, only then will we know the true market value of this coin. In the meantime, it gives me pleasure!

That gives me hope. I am sending a coin to CAC (first time ever, I bit the bullet) to get a sticker replaced on a new holder. I figured I’d get a bit more use out of my postage cost and am throwing in this coin below for 💩’s and grins figuring because of the spot above the hair braid it doesn’t have a chance. Absolutely a beautiful coin and that spot is disguised at most angles. Maybe there’s hope.

I picked this up at FUN ‘23, it wasn’t what I was originally shopping for but I saw it on the first day and kept coming back to the table to visit and see if it had sold. It is a very appealing 58 with a lot of mint luster remaining, and barely any deep contact marks. I love the color and the patina, however I decided to overlook the spots which I think are grease or dirt or something. 1853 is a tough date to find with eye appeal, and I think this coin was a great value considering what it would cost in a low MS grade.

A friend gave me this coin several years ago. It was from a proof set that he had stored in a fireproof safe that had high humidity inside. A whole bunch of his coins got ruined in that safe.
