As a user and most-of-the-time enjoyer of the RM Collectors' Services dept, I will say it is not a flawless system.

I had RMCS reach out to me to offer me pre-sale of some new supremely-limited-availability coins. I selected 2. They got back to me to let me know that in the intervening minutes between their initial email and my response [<30 min], the 2 I'd selected had sold, but they could offer me another pair, and they were reserving them for me until they heard back from me. Got back to them saying yes, those would work and arranged a bank wire. Bank wire sent, 1 wk passes, they confirmed receipt of wired funds and then shared with me that 1 of the 2 coins they 'reserved' for me was having 'stock issues' ... translation: they sold one of the coins they had 'reserved' for me and for which I had wired funds.

    Resolution is still in process.

So, mint representative reaching out to me to offer me first crack at wildly-low-mintage coins before they go on sale to the public: incredible; dream come true.

wiring money for 'reserved' coins only to have those coins sold out from under me: not really super great.

havent really 'tested out' a number of other services under the RMCS umbrella, but my dealings with this dept have been about 50/50, so maybe better than 20/80 with the US Mint?

Something else that's sort of tangentially related to RMCS is that the RM has started pre-selling slabbed and graded coins of new releases, which seems pretty convenient for many collectors who are going to send them in and spin the wheel as it were; this gives you the confidence that you're getting the grade you want directly[ish] from the mint itself.

  • Not so many people buy from them anymore, the mintages are often very low.

Is the RMCS part of the Royal Mint? Or an independent organization with special resources with the RM? Cheers, RickO

My understanding is that it's a branch of Royal Mint proper, but haven't looked deeper to understand if it is technically an independent entity.
