[I have thought the same thing. It would be fun to have competitions to put together sets based on not spending more than a targeted amount.]

Cynical me again...one might think that registries were created, at least in part, to prompt you to spend more and more...and to buy and buy...

Say it ain't so, lol. :p

But yes, spending "plateaus" would be interesting...or maybe set groupings that exclude some of the more stratospheric coins.

Another though and this might have some flaws as I have not thought it out. When looking at the PL Morgan category sets they allow certain dates to be non-PL due to difficulty in finding PL for that date.

So an Everyman set that is a combo of the Everyman MS and the regular Everyman. That is the maximum allowed in the set is MS64 (that is the current Everyman MS but I guess it could be suggested to be higher/lower) but for certain dates (like in the PL sets) the maximum grade allowed would be the Everyman AU58+. These AU58+ maximum dates would be those determined to be 'higher value' and stated in the set 'rules'. Maybe it is the Morgan Everyman Value Set. :)

I myself are in somewhat of the same boat.I have 15 more to go and no way can they all be in MS.They just skyrocket in those grades. But I tried my best so far.Maybe it also will be fun finding the best looking lower grade examples.I had to buy a lower grade 79-CC but I tell myself it has character.

There is an easy way to test this - buy a couple common dates in 45/50 and see how they look in combination with the rest of your set. If you like the look, great! If it bothers you, consider pursuing a different strategy for a matched set. That way you test your emotional reaction prior to sinking a lot of cash into a key date XF/AU coin.

My morgan set is my only set where grades are all over the place - from AG to MS65. I acquired many of them as a YN and I bought the best I could afford at the time. The set is about 2/3rds complete and I don’t plan to finish it - I just really enjoy it as-is!

Well...this conversation got my juices flowing...and then I saw this coin float past...so I pulled the trigger.

I already had two other non-VAM 1880-S coins...one PL and the other straight Unc...but this one was cleaner and an interesting VAM...so there you go.
