The S mintmark says it was minted in San Francisco and it started out in a special set. It was in either a proof set in 1975 or 1976 or in a silver clad set (uncirculated or proof). You might be able to tell by looking at the edge reeding to see if there is a visible copper core.
An S mint could be nickel or silver clad.
Check the weight on it, a silver clad should weigh about 5.75 grams and a nickel clad should weigh about 5.67 grams.
If you do the drop test you should be able to hear a higher ring for the silver one.
Either one will have a copper core.
Checking the weight might not tell you anything since the weight ranges of the two types when you account for acceptable tolerances overlap (5.55 to 5.95 for the silver clad, 5.443 to 5.897 for the c/n clad) significantly.
Nice find... Was it really found in a washing machine? Yours or commercial? I knew a fellow who would check commercial machines for loose change... He was a tad strange, worked for me, and definitely was a character. Cheers, RickO

I still check for loose change in pay phone coin return shoots.

Not rare to buy, but... you could search 50 boxes of rolled coin and not come across one. It's not common to find it in circulation. The free find is always fun - even when not super valuable. Glad you are enjoying it.
I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.

I find more loose change than pay phones. I thought they were extinct?

plus it is worn to the 45-50 area, what are they supposed to weigh?
A silver clad one will sound different than a nickel clad one.
It is definitely silver , sound is way different. What's the value for something like this? And how rare is it?
They are not at all rare. If you're patient, you can get an uncirculated one on eBay for three or four dollars.
Not rare, about 4,000,000 were minted but quite a few were melted.
Silver value is around $1.50

I get $50 worth of quarters from the coin exchange at different places . Then cash them in for dollers to find star notes and errors . Fun hobby
