I do that all the time too. I will be looking for other things and come across something that really catches my eye, and I buy it because I have no impulse control. LOL
Three cent nickels are cool because the average person has no idea these coins even exist, so they are fantastic conversation starters!

I also have "shiny-object-syndrome". That's why my "collection" is unfocused - more of a hoard! But, it's my hoard!
I think that's where I'm going to "focus" my "collection", going forward, though. Instead of trying to get sets of Morgans, or Mercs, or Wheaties, or whatever, I'm going to sell off most of the junk I do have, and only buy coins that really interest me for whatever reason. Maybe it's because they're a great story, like the 2-cent or 3-cent piece, or because they have great toning, like some of my Morgans, or because I like the design like the WLH, or because they're really, really old, like Ancients! I'm planning on letting my "shiny-object-syndrome" shine on!!!
I have some raw 3-cent pieces, also. Got them for kicks and giggles. Sorry about the bad pics - taken in 2005, when I had no idea what I was doing with coin photography. I still don't!
You rock that shiny-object-syndrome! Nothing wrong with that!!!
I too do buy off series purchases.
That is why I watch the eBay newly listed and ending soon listings. You just never know what will tickle your fancy.

Sometimes, you can score really good deals that way! (Looking at "Ending soon" listings) I do the exact same thing. You sift through 99 pieces of junk, but that 100th listing is a diamond. (maybe)
I have gotten some really good deals on graded modern proofs, for example, which I sometimes give to grandkids or other family to try and spark an interest in numismatics.
